With diamantaire Nirav Modi traced to London, the CBI is in touch with Interpol and UK authorities asking them to act on the red notice against the fugitive and arrest him with immediate effect.
CBI sources say they will ask the Interpol UK to make sure he doesn¡¯t flee from there as he is likely to travel to some other country on a different identity.
Officials said the UK and Interpol had informed them in August 2018 itself that Nirav Modi was in the country but his exact location was not known. Indian agencies had also learnt that he was frequently travelling to European countries, and was meeting his lawyers to discuss legal proceedings against him in India, UK and the US. Some of the countries he travelled to last year include France, Hong Kong, the US, and Belgium.

¡°Since his location is known now, the first step should be to arrest him as there is enough evidence of cheating, criminal conspiracy and money laundering against him which has been provided to the UK in the extradition request. His Indian passport has already been revoked which means the UK authorities need to confiscate whatever travel documents he currently uses,¡± said an officer, requesting anonymity.

As soon as he is caught, a joint team of CBI and ED is likely to send a team to London to assist in the extradition trial. A red notice, international arrest warrant, was issued against Nirav Modi in July while an extradition request was sent to the UK in August last year.
He is accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of Rs 13,578 crore along with his uncle Mehul Choksi in what is considered as India¡¯s biggest bank scam.
