Assam: After Kaziranga Loses 18 Rhinos To Floods, Poachers Kill Female Rhino, Chop Off Horn
A bullet-ridden carcass of an adult female rhino with its horn removed by poachers was found inside the Kaziranga National Park. The carcass was spotted by the patrolling staff in Meteka beel area under Gabrai Anti-poaching Camp on Friday. Six rounds of empty cartridges were also recovered from the area. A poacher - involved in several rhino poaching cases - was arrested in connection.
While Assam battles severe floods that have killed more than a hundred people so far, poaching is also on the rise.
In a second case this year from Kaziranga, a bullet-ridden carcass of an adult female rhino with its horn removed by poachers was found inside the Kaziranga National Park.
The carcass was spotted by the patrolling staff in Meteka beel area under Gabrai Anti-poaching Camp on Friday.
Six rounds of empty cartridges were also recovered from the area.
According to news agency ANI, the rhino is an adult female and was killed due to gunshots. Six rounds of empty cartridge of Point 303 rifle were recovered from the spot. The horn of the rhino was cut off and taken away by poachers.
According to a report by TOI, a poacher - involved in several rhino poaching cases - was arrested from Biswanath area in connection.
At around 11 am today, a rhino was found dead in an area under Gabrai anti-poaching camp. Adult female rhino was killed due to gunshot. This is the second rhino killed by poachers in KNP this year so far. Earlier an adult male rhino was shot dead in the park's Agoratoli forest range on May 9 and its horn was also found missing. KNP had lost three rhinos to poachers in 2019.
Kaziranga also lost 18 rhinos during the flood season and two calves are under treatment after they were rescued.
