Pregnant Elephant Eats Pineapple Laden With Crackers, Dies Standing In Water After Days Of Pain

In an utterly inhuman act that cannot be described in words, a pregnant elephant in Kerala died of excruciating pain after it bit a fruit that was filled with firecrackers. The shocking incident was reported from the Palakkad District of Kerala last week.

A forest officer who was part of the team that tied to rescue the elephant narrated the details of the horrific death on social media. According to Mohan Krishnan, a Section Forest Officer with the Kerala Forest Department, the elephant was around 15 years old.

He said that the elephant could have strayed into the human settlement in search of food as she was pregnant.

It is still unclear how exactly the pregnant elephant was injured, but Krishnan believes that someone could have fed her a pineapple or some other fruit that was filled with firecrackers. There is another possibility that she could have accidentally bitten on a trap that was laid for wild boars.

"She came out of the forest in search of food, but she could not have know what the selfish men could do to her. She trusted everyone and ate whatever they gave her. And when the pineapple that she ate exploded in her mouth she could have been more concerned about the baby growing inside her," Krishnan wrote.

He further stated that the panicked elephant ran amok while in excruciating pain, but still did not attack any human being that came across or damage any houses that were on the way.

Krishnan, who was part of the Rapid Response Team that was tasked to rescue the elephant said he first saw her standing in the Velliyar River, with her trunk and face in the water.

"She was weak and starving... She could have been trying to keep the flies away from the injuries inside her mouth and face by keeping it under the water," Krishnan said.

The Forest officials then devised a plan to rescue the injured elephant from the water and treat her injuries. Two kumki elephants, which are jumbos that are specially trained for such rescue operations were brought to the river. But before they could do anything the pregnant elephant lost her battle with pain on Saturday afternoon, standing in the water.

Krishnan said the kumki elephants were quick to realize what was happening and added that he saw tears rolling down from their eyes. Later the body was brought out of the river and taken to postmortem and to the shock of everyone the doctor said in a breaking voice - she was not alone!

"Even though he was wearing a mask, I could feel what was going on behind it," Krishna wrote. He ended the post saying that "as her funeral pyre was burning, I bowed down to the mother in her. Sorry sister...."
