Reach Delhi Airport In 20 Mins Instead Of 2 Hours, As Urban Extension Road-2 To Open Soon

Those leaving for Delhi airport from Haryana and West Delhi hours in advance in order to surpass the heavy traffic and reach in time for boarding can now heave a sigh of relief.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that the newly constructed Urban Extension Road (UER) 2 will bring down travel time to Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) from Kundli on the Delhi-Haryana border to 20 minutes instead of two hours.

What is the Urban Extension Road 2?

Urban Extension Road-II is a 29-km-long country¡¯s first elevated eight-lane access control expressway.

It is constructed with the aim to provide seamless connectivity from Mahipalpur on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway to Delhi-Chandigarh highway bypassing the congested Ring Road.

Three National Highways will be connected by the Urban Extension Road-II: NH-8, NH-10 and NH-1.

There are four levels of this road network: tunnel, underpass, grade road, elevated road and a flyover being built over the flyover.

The road was proposed in the Master Plan of Delhi-2021 and was touted as the third Ring Road to decongest the current Ring Road and Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.

"While coming to Delhi, after Panipat, there is a peripheral ring road. After that, a new ring road called UER 2 has been built in Delhi... After the construction of this road, you will be able to reach T3 airport directly in just 20 minutes instead of two hours. We have also built a large tunnel inside the road at the Shiv Murti junction, which connects T3 from below the airstrip," said Gadkari.

The road is set to improve the connectivity of the people of Haryana and West Delhi with IGI Airport.

Who is building the road and by When will it be ready?

According to the original plan of the early 2000s - NCR Transport Plan 2021 - Delhi Development Authority was to build the road. In 2018, this task was handed over to the NHAI due to financial viability and land procurement problems.

But after delays due to non-avalability of land, the road will now be open to the public in the next two to three months, according to Gadkari.

At a total cost of Rs 9,000 crore, UER 2 will be the country¡¯s first elevated urban expressway and is expected to reduce the traffic problem between Delhi and Gurugram.
