Not Only Hyderabad Rape Case, These 19 Cases In Past One Week Have Shaken India's Conscience

On November 27, a veterinary doctor was raped and set ablaze by four truck drivers and cleaners near a toll gate in the southern city of Hyderabad. Her charred body was found a day after she went missing and this has resulted in protests and outrage across the country.

A large number of people are venting out their frustration at the state of affairs and the break down of law and order on social media and several hundreds have been protesting on the ground too.

Parliament took up the issue too and while one MP suggested that rapists be ¡®lynched¡¯ publicly, the issue, more or less, remains unaddressed, minus the uproar.

In the meanwhile, the reports of rapes see no end, if anything, the brutality is becoming more gruesome with every new incident that comes to the fore.

Here are 19 cases of sexual assault and violence that have surfaced over the past week alone in the republic of rape that India is fast emerging into:

Out on bail, rapist brutally attacks survivor, husband

In a sheer act of vengeance, a rapist, who was released on bail a few days back, brutally attacked a couple in Kota, leaving them critically injured on November 29. It is believed that the incident, which took place on Wednesday, was the fallout of the wife filing a rape complaint against the accused.

According to Babulal, Assistant Sub-inspector at the Police Control Room, Kota, "A 40-year-old man was stabbed several times by four miscreants in the main market. Later, the accused went to the man's residence in Sajidehda and stabbed his wife. Both the husband and wife were rushed to the MBS Hospital where they have been declared out of danger now."

The injured man named the four accused in his complaint who had managed to flee, said Kaithunipol SHO Pawan Kumar Meena, adding that hunt was on to trace them.

Gujarat: Girl raped, fiance attacked by 2 men

A girl was allegedly raped and her fiance was brutally beaten up by two men at an open ground in Navlakhi area in Vadodra, on November 29. According to a complaint filed with the police, the girl was sitting in a car with her fiance at Navlakhi ground when two unidentified men approached and attacked them at around 8 pm.

"While one of them started beating the girl's fiance, other accused dragged the girl out of the car. The man rescued himself from the hold of the attacker and rushed for help," the police said. Meanwhile, the two accused dragged the girl to a nearby bush and took turns to rape her.

The girl's fiance approached a PCR van and narrated his ordeal. When the police along with the man reached the spot, they did not find the girl.

"The policemen informed the control room and a search was launched. The girl was finally found in the bushes around 10 pm," the police said. A medico-legal test was conducted on the girl which confirmed gangrape.

Telangana: Another charred body of an unidentified woman recovered

A charred body of an unidentified woman was found in the outskirts of Shamshabad near Siddula Gutta temple under the limits of RGI Airport Police Station limits on November 30.

According to Prakash Reddy, DCP Shamshabad zone Cyberabad, the police received information from locals who saw that female body burning near the temple. They tried to douse the fire but failed in an attempt to save her.

Prima facie, it appeared to be a body of a 30 to 35-year-old lady whose identity was yet to be ascertained by the police. The body had to be been shifted to a government hospital for an autopsy.

Multiple teams have been formed to investigate the case.

PRD jawan held for raping minor in UP

A Prantiya Raksha Dal (PRD) jawan has been arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in Badaun. The incident took place on December 1 when the girl was on the terrace of her house.

The accused, her neighbour, jumped from the adjoining terrace there and raped her. Police have sent the accused to jail and the victim underwent a medical examination. According to O.P. Gautam, station house officer, Civil Lines police station, the girl and the accused were neighbours and belong to the same caste.

The girl in her complaint alleged that she had gone up to the terrace to use the toilet when her 25-year-old neighbour suddenly pounced on her and raped her.

The rape survivor claimed that when she raised an alarm, her parents rushed to the terrace but the accused managed to flee.

Minor girl raped, murdered in Tonk

A six-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Tonk district of Rajasthan on December 1. The girl had gone to school on the previous day but did not return till late. Her family members started looking for her and found the body at an isolated place in Kheldi village of Aligarh town, police said.

¡°Prima facie, the girl was raped and strangulated to death. The body has been shifted to the district hospital for postmortem,¡± SHO of Aligarh Police Station, Ram Krishan, said.

He said efforts are on to identify and arrest the accused.

6-year-old raped, strangled to death with her school belt

A six-year-old girl student was found raped and strangled to death with her own school belt on Sunday, police said.

Her body was recovered from bushes in a remote area near her village Khetadi. Liquor bottles, snacks and bloodstains were also found at the spot, police officials said. According to police, there was a sports competition at the girl's school on Saturday and she went missing after it ended.

Her family started searching for her when she did not reach home by 3 p.m. but it was only her blood-stained body that was found near the village this morning.

Body of rape victim found hanging in college hostel

The body of a lecturer, who had levelled rape charges against her relative, was found hanging inside a college hostel at Rairangpur on December 1.

The deceased had lodged an FIR at Jharpokharia police station on October 30 alleging that she had been raped by a distant relative during her visit to Keonjhar on October 27. Following her death, the accused was arrested from Cuttack on Sunday.

Mayurbhanj Superintendent of Police P S Parshottam Das on Sunday also suspended Sub-Inspector Prashant Swain and transferred Inspector-in-Charge of Jharpokharia police station Sarat Kumar Mahalik for negligence of duty in connection with the death of the woman. When the 23-year-old lecturer of Rairangpur College had not turned up for dinner and repeated knocks by the inmates did not yield any response, the police was informed.

The police broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.

Sonbhadra: Man arrested for raping 70-year-old woman

Uttar Pradesh Police on December 2 arrested a man for allegedly raping a 70-year-old woman under Anpara police station limits of Sonbhadra district. The crime occurred on December 1, following which the police registered a case and arrested the accused one Ram Kishan.

Sharing details of the horrifying case, Circle Officer said, "The FIR was registered as soon as we got the information. The accused has been arrested. The woman is under treatment."

Woman raped by policeman, aide in Puri

A woman was allegedly gang raped by two persons including a policeman inside a police quarter in Odisha's temple town of Puri on December 2 in Puri. Police said the woman lodged a complaint saying a man, who identified himself as a police personnel, offered her a lift in his car while she was waiting at a bus stand in Nimapara town.

"I was on my way from Bhubaneswar to my village at Kakatpur. I believed him and accepted the lift," the woman told reporters outside Kumbharpada police station where she filed her complaint.

She found three other men in the car after she got into it, the woman said.

"Instead of taking me towards Kakatpur, they took me to Puri town. The four took me to a house where two of them raped me while two others left after closing the door from outside," the victim claimed.

The house was a police quarter near Jhadeswari Club in Puri town. The victim, during the sexual assault, could grab the wallet of one of the accused and the photo-identity card and Aadhaar card of his was recovered from it, the police said.

Half-burnt body of woman found in Chhattisgarh

Amidst the furore over the rape and murder of a veterinary doctor in Telangana, police have begun conducting inquiries to identify the woman whose half-burnt body was found in Murka village in Rajpur region here, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Balrampur, TR Koshima, on December 2.

"Efforts to identify the body are still on. We are also sending the information to nearby districts to find out the details of the deceased. Since the post-mortem report is yet to come, we cannot say if it was a rape," Koshima told reporters.

Koshima added that prima-facie it looked like the body of the woman was dropped off at the location from where it was recovered.

"The place from where the body was recovered is kind of a picnic spot where lots of people come and stay for an hour or two, according to the villagers. It is therefore unlikely that the body was burnt here," he added.

Schoolgirl gang-raped by CRPF jawan, three others in UP's Mirzapur

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by four men, including a CRPF jawan in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district, police confirmed on December 4.

The incident took place on Monday night when the high school student was allegedly called by one of the accused, who along with three others took her to a forest and gang-raped her, they said.

An FIR was registered by the victim's father on Tuesday at Haliya police station under various sections including Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Inspector Davidar Shukla said.

He said the accused had called the girl's mother on Monday night at 10 pm but when the girl came out of her house, they forced her in their vehicle and drove towards Halia forest. Seeing this, the villagers informed the police. When the accused were returning with the girl a few hours later, police caught them and took the five including the victim to the police station, he said.

Ex-convict rapes 60-year-old aunt in AP, held

A 31-year-old ex-convict allegedly raped his 60-year-old aunt in I.Polavaram Mandal of East Godavari district following which he was arrested, police said on December 4. The irate villagers bashed up the accused identified as K Nagababu and handed him over to the police on Tuesday.

The victim, a widow, resided alone in her house in the village while her daughter stayed in Hyderabad.

The accused, who was allegedly in an inebriated state, committed the heinous crime and fled the scene after sprinkling chilli powder on the victim as well as inside the house to avoid detection by sniffer dogs.

Nagababu also stole some cash from the victim's house.

Half-burnt body of a woman found in Bihar

After the shocking rape and murder of a veterinary doctor in Telangana, a half-burnt body of a woman was found in a remote area in Buxar's Kukurha village, police said on December 3.

"The half-burnt body of a girl was found in a remote area which comes under the jurisdiction of Itari police station. We are trying to identify the victim. We have sent the body for post-mortem and have begun investigations after registering a case," said Superintendent of Police, Upendra Nath Verma.

The police official added that an empty shell was recovered from near the body of the victim, leading to the suspicion that the woman was first shot and then burnt. "An empty shell was recovered from near the body of the victim, prima facie it looks like the girl was first shot and then the criminals tried to burn off her body. Further investigations are underway," Verma added.

9-year-old girl raped, strangled to death in Karnataka village

A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped and strangled to death at a village in Kalaburagi district, police said on December 3. A resident of Sulepet in Chicholi Taluk, she had gone missing on Monday evening after she went out to play with her friends.

Her blood-stained naked body was found in the field near a pond on the outskirts of the village on Monday night, police said. A 34-year-old tailor, identified as Yallappa Mahadevappa Sedam, with whom the girl was allegedly last seen, has been arrested, police said.

"The man had lured the girl to eat a packaged snack and then took her to the field where he allegedly perpetrated the crime," a senior police official at Sulepet police station told PTI.

Five arrested for setting on fire UP rape survivor

Five men have been arrested for allegedly setting on fire a woman, who was raped a year ago in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, police said on Thursday.

The woman, who is battling for life in a Lucknow hospital, had named five men, including two of the accused who are out on bail, police said.

The five men arrested on charges of the assault on her life while she was on her way to a court in Rae Bareli on Thursday are Harishankar Trivedi, Ram Kishore Trivedi, Umesh Bajpai, Shivam and Shubham Trivedi, Circle Officer Gaurav Tripathi said in Unnao.

Woman's charred body found in Bengal's Malda; rape suspected

In a rerun of the Hyderabad veterinary doctor's murder, a young woman's charred body was found in a mango orchard in West Bengal's Malda district on Thursday, raising suspicion that she was raped and killed, a senior police officer said.

The body has suffered severe burns, making it difficult to ascertain the woman's identity, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Prasanta Debnath said.

Local farmers spotted the body in English Bazar Police Station area in the morning, following which they raised an alarm, the DCP, who visited the site along with Superintendent of Police Alok Rajoria, said.

"Prima facie it seems that the victim is in her early 20s. Her body has several injury marks. We have sent it for postmortem to Malda medical college," he said, adding that a probe has been initiated in the case.

Girl raped by hotel staffer in Jaipur

A 19-year old girl was allegedly raped by a staffer of a hotel where she was undergoing training for hotel management course in Jaipur, police said on Thursday.

The victim, a resident of Mumbai, lodged an FIR with the Kho Nagorian police station on Wednesday alleging that the accused, Akshya, raped her near the hotel on Friday night.

"She attended a party hosted by some friends in a club where Akshay was also present. After the party, he took the girl to a place near the hotel, where he works, and allegedly raped her," police said.

"The matter is under investigation. No arrest has been made so far," the police added.

10-yr-old girl raped by cousin in HP

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her cousin in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district on Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place when the girl was going to school, Kullu Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh said.

A case has been registered against the accused under section 376AB (punishment for rape on woman under 12 years of age) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at a women police station on the victim's statement, he said.

The accused, a Class 10 student, is a child in conflict with law (not completed 18 years of age), Singh said. Following the incident, the accused fled the spot, the SSP said.

9-yr-old girl dies after being raped by her father in Rohtak

A nine-year-old girl died after she was allegedly raped by her father in Rohtak district of Haryana, police said on Wednesday. According to the victim's mother, she and her husband have been living separately.

Her husband took their daughter to his home on November 27 and allegedly raped her, the woman said in her complaint. On Sunday, a day after the accused dropped his daughter back to her mother's home, she started vomiting and her condition deteriorated, the police said.

She was taken to the civil hospital where she died during treatment on Tuesday, a police official of Rohtak City police station said over phone. The victim's father, a native of Bihar, is absconding, the police said.
