Imagine getting an electricity bill that could buy you a luxury car! That's exactly what happened to a laborer from Bihar, who was left utterly baffled when his modest home with just three bulbs and two fans racked up an astronomical Rs 31 lakh electricity bill. Talk about a shocking surprise!
Shubhlal Sahni, a laborer residing in the Piar police station region of Simra panchayat in Muzaffarpur, is deeply troubled by an astonishing electricity bill that has left him and his family in distress.
Despite numerous visits to the electricity department, Sahni's home remains disconnected from the power supply.
In an interview with Aaj Tak, Sahni explained, "The electricity connection at my home is in my wife Phoolan Devi's name. I have been sent an electricity bill of Rs 31 lakh. We had a smart meter installed by the electricity department around two months ago. Initially, the electricity supply was fine, but it was later cut off."
Sahni's modest home, which contains just two fans and three bulbs, is an unlikely candidate for such a staggering bill. He added, "I recharged Rs 400 on June 20, but the electricity was not restored.
When I visited the electricity department, officials told me that a bill of Rs 31 lakh is pending. Before this, I received a bill of Rs 2,600. I cannot understand how the bill could suddenly be so high."
The Sahni family is struggling without electricity in the sweltering summer heat.
Abhishek Ranjan, an official from the electricity department, acknowledged the issue, stating that a complaint has been received and Sahni has been asked to submit a written complaint.
Ranjan assured that the case will be investigated, and the meter reader will be inspected to identify any faults. He promised that the matter will be resolved after a thorough inspection.
