The Central Government, through the Ministry of Law and Justice, has formally declared the appointment of Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.
Chief Justice of the Karnataka HC now SC judge
Presently serving as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Varale's elevation to the Supreme Court is sanctioned under the authority conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India.
The official notification specifies that the President, while exercising these powers, has accorded approval for Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale to assume the role of a Supreme Court Judge, effective from the date he commences his duties in the position.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Prasarma Bhalachandra Varale, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office," a law ministry notification read.

Who is Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale?
Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale, born on 23 June 1962 in Nipani, Karnataka, has an illustrious legal career. Graduating in Arts and Law from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, he commenced his advocacy journey in 1985.
Appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in July 2008, he secured a permanent judgeship three years later. His tenure at the Bombay High Court spanned 14 years, culminating in his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in October 2022. A noteworthy distinction is that he stands as the sole Chief Justice among High Courts hailing from the Scheduled Caste.
Justice Varale proudly attributes his journey to his family's association with Dr. B R Ambedkar, emphasizing that his achievements wouldn't have been conceivable without that influence. Known for proactive measures, Justice Varale has initiated suo-moto cases in the public interest.
