These Good Samaritans Are Trying To Provide Oxygen To Hospitals, Patients: See List

Our country is battling with the second wave of COVID-19 and our hospitals are going through dire situations. Hospitals urgently need more oxygen cylinders and concentrators to save as many lives as possible. Here's a list of individuals/ groups working to supply oxygen to the hospitals:

1. Democracy People Foundation: Mission Oxygen

Democracy People Foundation started a self-funded mission to help hospitals across the country get immediate access to oxygen concentrators. However, within a few hours, the foundation received the request for over 3000 oxygen concentrators.

They have managed to procure 500 concentrators from China, which will be shipped out on Monday for India and will be able to supply them to the hospitals earliest by Wednesday.

The NGO says, "We have already raised approximately Rs 50 lakh for this initiative and have placed an order for 100 concentrators already. But to process the order for the remaining 400 concentrators by Monday we need to raise another Rs 2.5 crore."

2. Indian firms chip in

Jindal Steel and Power and Vedanta group have volunteered to supply oxygen from their plants, Allcargo Logistics has offered to ship 500 oxygen concentrators from Singapore for the Maharashtra government. The concentrators help produce oxygen from air.

Even ITC has tied up with Linde India to airfreight 24 cryogenic ISO containers of 20 tonnes each from Asian countries for use by them to transport medical oxygen across the country, said the company.

As of Friday, nearly a dozen firms, including Reliance Industries Ltd, Tata Steel Ltd, Indian Oil Corp. Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd and JSW Steel Ltd, are supplying oxygen to hospitals. Industries use oxygen for combustion, oxidation, cutting and chemical reactions. To make industrial oxygen suitable for administering to humans, firms need to free it from impurities.

¡°It is not possible to set up new oxygen manufacturing plants or expand existing ones at short notice. That has also aggravated the demand-supply issue," said a Mumbai-based doctor, adding that with various firms pitching in, oxygen supply is being managed.

3. Nahru Bhai Mewati, a social worker from Mandsaur

Nahru Bhai Mewati has set up an example by helping out the district hospital with oxygen supplies that too shelling out money from own pocket. Mewat, an elderly social-worker who last year too had engaged himself in social welfare during the Covid-19 outbreak has collaborated with the government hospitals to help the district hospital with oxygen cylinders, a commodity turned into the lifeline of Covid-19 centres and patients.

The supplies have been outnumbered by the influx of patients in private and government hospitals as administration is working round the clock to keep supplies intact. Nahru Bhai is using his contacts in neighbouring Rajasthan four sourcing oxygen cylinders in Mandsaur.

¡°I am a servant of this city and till my last breath, I won¡¯t allow oxygen supply shortage to hassle local residents,¡± said the social activist. He was all praise for the district collector, CMHO, other officials, local MP and others for being available with help in his endeavour. ¡°The officials remain available if I need any sort of government permission even at midnight,¡± he said.

4. Gurdwara offers 'oxygen langar'

A Gurdwara in Ghaziabad¡¯s Indirapuram has started an ¡°Oxygen Langar¡± to help patients with respiratory problems.

The Shri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Indirapuram along with an NGO, Khalsa Help International, took up the initiative and started administering free oxygen on Thursday evening. By Friday evening, more than 700 patients had visited the ¡°langar¡±.

On Friday afternoon, a long queue of patients who were in dire need of oxygen was seen outside the gurdwara. There were arrangements made to provide oxygen support to patients who are unable to get out of their cars.

Gurpreet Singh, head of the gurdwara committee, said COVID patients are struggling to get oxygen and their relatives are running pillar to post to arrange for cylinders. ¡°With the help of volunteers, we are providing oxygen support to patients who can come to the gurdwara,¡± said Singh.
