This Guy's Open Letter To Bewakoof.com On Their Homophobic Meme Will Make Them Weep
Bewakoofcom a popular online shopping website posted this on their Facebook page. The post reads &ldquoSave the girl child or else 25 years later your son will come home and say Asha to mili nahi so Ashish le aya&rdquo What&rsquos wrong with the post?
UPDATE: Bewakoof.com has apologised on their own blog and has since then removed the meme from their Facebook page. We hope they take a moment to realise who their memes might and might not offend.
India is struggling with homophobia, the worst part being that people don't realise how homophobic they actually are. The LGBT community in the country is fighting for sexual freedom to have the discriminatory Sec 377 removed from the Constitution. However, to the common people, they are still the butt of jokes when it comes to gender issues. Bewakoof.com, a popular online shopping website, posted this on their Facebook page.

Bringing down a minority to raise awareness on a social issue is not the way to go ahead. Nor is it an issue to make fun of. This is what a young blogger, who calls himself Wanderer, had to say in his open letter to the website:
Hi team!
I am disappointed to say this, that you people are disrespectful (may not be all, but I believe most of you).
I am gay and recently I came across a post on your page female infanticide. The cause is good, but in order to promote that, you people are spreading homophobia.
Your post reads ¡°Save the girl child or else 25 years later your son will come home and say, "Asha to mili nahi so Ashish le aya¡±.
What¡¯s wrong with the post? Let me help you understand. In our country we are already denied the right to marry the guy we love and there's a lot of homophobic people who just hate our existence as if we are overunning their lives.

To add to their hatred, your post suggests that we want to marry men because we don¡¯t have the option to marry a girl.
Let me tell you, there are a lot of girls who would love to marry me and to many of my homosexual friends but we want to marry a person of same sex out of love and not because men are substitutes for women when there¡¯s no one left for heterosexual males to marry.
Homosexuals have existed from through out history and none of them have been attracted to the same sex because they had no women to love or be attracted to.
The sad thing is, all the people out there think it¡¯s a joke but for people like us, it's not funny.
WE ARE NOT SUBSTITUTES. We want to marry a person of the same sex, the same reason any straight couple wants to get married, for love.

Show some respect to existence of the people who most of the times end up disowned in this country. Respect those so many unaccounted deaths who have committed suicide because they are constantly pushed to live a life that they cannot really live. Respect the gay men and women without whom you would be nowhere. For example, Sir Alan Turing because of whom you can use a computer in today's world.

Don't be so thankless to so many wonderful people like Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, Ian McKellen and so many people from the history. Don't be insensitive to so many gay designers who have generously contributed your industry, the fashion industry. Show some respect!
Please understand that gay marriages are also out of love and not out of not having an option.
Work for a social cause, but not at the cost of demeaning a minority.
I don't know what actions are you gonna take but I hope you guys will understand.
Thanks and regards,
We are currently awaiting bewakoof.com's response to this, on how they will address this issue. We are told that this is the second time the website is openly spreading homophobia and sexism with its memes and jokes.
