Tiger Kills, Eats Farmer In Madhya Pradesh, Shepherd Mauled To Death In Maharashtra

A suspected man-eater tiger is spreading panic among residents of Burhanpur district, Madhya Pradesh districts.

In Burhanpur, a farmer and two bulls were recently killed by a tiger. The tiger killed Munna Kasdekar, a native of Gondi village, on Thursday.

Farmer guarding crop killed by tiger

The 38-year-old farmer was guarding crops at night and when he did not return in the morning, his family went looking for him.

Munna's half-eaten body was recovered at a nearby field on Thursday morning.

Taking cognizance of the farmer's death, the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission has sought a report from the Burhanpur collector and divisional forest officer (DFO).

The forest Department has sanctioned a compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the kin of the deceased.

Forest department to track the tiger

The tiger which killed Munna is believed to be the same one that attacked two bulls in the area a few days ago.

Following the tiger attacks, the forest department installed camera traps to track and identify the big cat.

It is suspected that the tiger may have strayed from Melghat Tiger Reserve.

Tiger kills shepherd in Maharashtra

On Thursday evening, another tiger attack was reported from Chandrapur in Maharashtra.

A tiger attacked Bhaurao Devtale, a shepherd returning with his cattle in the forest near Kacchepar village under Sindewahi forest.

He was rescued by villagers who rushed to the spot after hearing his cry for help but died in a hospital later while undergoing treatment.

Devtale is said to be the third human killed by tigers in Chandrapur in 2023.

Human tiger conflict in Chandrapur

Chandrapur, home to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, is a known human-animal conflict area.

In 2022, at least 49 people were killed in tiger attacks in Chandrapur.

There are around 115 tigers in Tadoba and the big cats straying outside the protected areas in search of food and territory is not uncommon.

Earlier this week, TATR Chief Conservator of Forests Jitendra Ramgaokar said that cameras will be installed near a village in Chandrapur to curb conflicts between humans and tigers.

These cameras will have a mechanism by which villagers, officials and personnel from the 'primary response team' will receive alerts in case a wild animal intrudes into the human habitat in the vicinity.

"Twenty cameras will be installed around Seetarampeth village. They will send alerts via internet after the image of a leopard or tiger is captured. It is a first of its kind project in Maharashtra to curb man-animal conflicts and is estimated to cost Rs 25 lakh," he said.
