Liquor Sales Banned In Bengaluru On February 14, But It Has Nothing To Do With Valentine's Day

In what could dampen the spirits of many in Bengaluru on the occasion of Valentine's Day, liquor will be unavailable in parts of the Karnataka capital on February 14.
The ban on liquor sales from February 14 to 17, however, has nothing to do with clamping down on Valentine's Day celebrations in the city.
Liquor ban in Bengaluru
The liquor ban was announced by Deputy Commissioner, Bengaluru Urban under Section 135(c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and considering Rule 10(b) of the Karnataka Excise Rules, 1967, due to the model code of conduct (MCC) that come into effect due to a by-election.
The Legislative Council by-election for the Bangalore Teachers Constituency is scheduled on February 16 and the MCC will be in place till February 23.
The liquor ban will come into effect from 5 pm on February 14 and will be in place till 6 am, on February 17.
By-elections in Bengaluru
The election will take place on February 16 from 8 am to 4 pm and the counting of votes will be on February 20.
The ECI said the polling process should be completed by February 23.
The ban on the sale of liquor will be applicable in seven assembly constituencies of Bangalore City district ¨C Yelahanka, Batarayanpur, Yeshavantpur, Dasarahalli, Mahadevpur, Bangalore South, and Anekal that will vote to elect a new representative.
The only areas that have been exempted from the liquor ban are those coming under Police Commissionerate jurisdiction.
Bars, pubs to be affected on Valentine's Day
The liquor ban has, however, affected Valentine's Day for many in the city including pubs and bars that were expecting big business on the day.
Industry bodies say that Valentine's Day sees up to a 50 per cent increase in daily business and not being able to serve liquor will affect them badly.
