The 2020 pandemic threw the future of travel into chaos. Then came the year of opening up, from borders to air travel and it¡¯s interesting to look back at some of the changes we¡¯ve seen so far in the year 2022. Although it¡¯s hard to predict what the long-term effects are going to be, one thing that¡¯s guaranteed is that the travel industry will adapt. So how has travel has changed in the last 1 year? Here are 5 ways.

1) Hospitality at an all-time low

Ever since the pandemic hit the world, the hospitality sector has been reeling under an unprecedented crisis. Less staff means less amenities and less emphasis on serving the guests the way it was done during the pre-pandemic times.

Due to lockdowns across the world, there has been a steep decline in occupancy in hotels. Since 2020, employees in the hospitality sector have had the hardest time. This also includes restaurants, bars, and other such establishments. Some estimates suggest that nearly half the jobs in hospitality sector were lost due to the pandemic.

Therefore, it's safe to say that over the top gestures or grand welcomes or a suite upgrade, are all secondary concerns of the industry currently.

2) Health & safety important

Rather, manpower and technology, both are used to boost health and safety for guests. Health and safety precautions have been taken to the next level. These actions have been implemented everywhere from airplanes to resorts, varying among each but always with the same.

At hotels and resorts, the housekeeping teams have upped their cleaning methods by using sanitation machines before and after your stay.

Check-in at many hotels has completely changed to be contactless for less interaction and germ spreading. Mask mandates and vaccination regulations are changing everyday and each destination is different.

3) Longer trips due to WFH

People have learned just how much they can work from home so why not work from a different country? In 2022, travellers opted for longer trips to truly experience the unique aura of a destination while being able to work and help their children with virtual school. It's a win win for all of us, isn't it?

4) No pre-booking

In the pre-pandemic era, people woild book their tickets much in advance. From flight bookings to hotel reservations, everything was done months before, which was cost effective.

However, this trend has become a thing of the past. Travellers were no longer booking tickets or hotels in advance because lockdowns and flight cancellations can happen anytime! Quite literally.

5) Everything became expensive

Airfares were way up in the year 2022. Fuel prices were higher than they¡¯ve ever been at this time of year. Rates for hotel rooms and rental cars have jumped 12% and 46% respectively from where they were in 2019.

The good news is that the prices for airfares, gas and hotel rooms are down from the record highs hit earlier in 2022, but they¡¯re still among the highest on record for this time of year. Only rental car prices are lower than what travelers were paying at the end of last year, although they¡¯re still far above pre-pandemic levels.
