Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari has said that anti-Romeo squads should be formed in Delhi too on the lines of those formed in Uttar Pradesh. Anti-romeo squads were formed under the Yogi Adityanath government to check crimes against women. It soon ran into controversy after it was alleged that it was nothing but state-sponsored moral policing.

Well, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari has said that anti-Romeo squads should be formed in Delhi too on the lines of those formed in Uttar Pradesh.

"Anti-Romeo squad is a very good thing and I appreciate that it is being started in Uttar Pradesh again. It should be welcomed as it is related to women safety. In my opinion, it should be started in Delhi also," he said.

"Anti-Romeo" squads were formed to check stalkers and harassers in Uttar Pradesh soon after Yogi Adityanath assumed the office of the Chief Minister in 2017.
However, it soon ran into controversy after it was alleged that it was nothing but state-sponsored moral policing.
There have also been a number of incidents were married couples and even siblings were harassed by the anti-Romeo squad.
Soon after it was formed the anti-Romeo squad was also rebranded as ¡®Nari Suraksha Bal¡¯ or women¡¯s protection force, but the original name still stuck.
This week it was reported that the Anti-Romeo squad of Noida police will issue "red cards" to offenders found harassing women at public places, as a warning before initiating criminal proceedings against them if they are caught indulging in the act again.

In order to check harassment of girls and women, the Noida Police also plans to reach out to students in schools and colleges and take their feedback regarding deployment of these squads at public places.
The initiative is aimed at making the anti-Romeo squad more effective and prevent public nuisance and lewd remarks that are passed on girls by loiterers, a police spokesperson said.
