Chaos Over Chair! Grandma's Quest For A Seat Leads To Groom Calling Off Wedding In Quirky UP Tradition
The groom unexpectedly called off the marriage a few hours later. Both the groom and his brother were drawn into the situation, and they ended up threatening the bride with potential consequences.
In the vibrant backdrop of Uttar Pradesh, where weddings often unfold with a unique blend of grandeur and unpredictability, an unusual incident recently transpired, underscoring the region's tendency for quirky marriage cancellations.
An altercation over a chair at a wedding in Bulandshahr took an unexpected turn, prompting the groom from Delhi to abruptly call off the marriage.
Subsequently, the bride's family allowed the groom's relatives to leave the venue only after settling the entire reception expenses.
What led to groom's objection at Uttar Pradesh wedding
The 'baraat' from Seemapuri, Delhi, arrived around 8 p.m. and was warmly welcomed by the bride's family. According to Mohd Mubeen, the bride's father, the marriage ceremony was performed by a 'maulvi' on Saturday night.
However, the groom unexpectedly called off the marriage a few hours later. According to Mubeen, around 10 pm, amidst the joyous festivities, a dispute erupted between an elderly woman and a guest, escalating into a heated argument.
"The elderly woman was the groom's grandmother, who felt insulted and conveyed her grievance to the groom. This led to a further escalation involving more people," Mubeen told Times of India.
According to witness Mohd Ishteaq, amidst the chaos, both the groom and his brother were drawn into the situation, and they ended up threatening the bride with potential consequences once she returned home with them.
The situation had become so intense that the groom's family found themselves trapped inside the venue while the bride's side demanded compensation for the expenses incurred during the event.
After a prolonged negotiation, the groom's family agreed to pay a sum of money, following which they were finally allowed to leave the venue.
"We've not received any complaint from either of the two sides. It seems they have settled the matter themselves. If the matter is brought to us, we'll investigate it," ASP Anukriti Sharma said.
History of such wedding call-offs in Uttar Pradesh
This incident sheds light on the unpredictability that can accompany wedding festivities in Uttar Pradesh, where even seemingly trivial matters can escalate into significant disruptions.
In one such incident from February 2023, a wedding in Uttar Pradesh faced disruption due to an unfortunate altercation sparked by the groom's fufaji's displeasure over not getting paneer to eat.
The incident gained public attention when @ImAdiYogi shared a video on Twitter. The footage depicted violent clashes among wedding attendees, with a woman attempting to restrain a man from joining the commotion.
Despite efforts from others to defuse the situation, the incident garnered mixed reactions. Some expressed concern over trivial issues triggering such reactions, while others found the incident amusing.
In another incident from December 2022, a woman in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, decided to cancel her wedding when the groom unexpectedly kissed her on stage in front of approximately 300 guests.
Following the completion of the garland exchange ceremony, the groom's impromptu action was met with disapproval from the bride. Without hesitation, she descended from the stage and promptly contacted the police.
