Alexei Navalny, who was Russian President Vladimir Putin¡¯s most vocal critic, died due to "sudden death syndrome", his mother was told on Saturday.
The 47-year-old Navalny passed away on Friday while serving a three-decade prison sentence in an Arctic penal colony. The Russian federal penitentiary service stated that Navalny collapsed and lost consciousness after a walk at the "Polar Wolf" penal colony in Kharp, approximately 1,900 km (1,200 miles) northeast of Moscow, and despite medical efforts, could not be revived.
What is 'Sudden death syndrome'?
Sudden death syndrome (SDS) is a term that covers different situations where someone unexpectedly and quickly passes away.
The person usually doesn't show many signs of being sick before it happens. Even after they die, a post-mortem examination might not show clear signs of what caused their death.
It's important to note that SDS is not a specific diagnosis, meaning there are no clear rules that apply to all cases of sudden death.
Also, there isn't a standardised list of symptoms because SDS isn't just one specific illness or disease. The symptoms, if any, can vary a lot depending on why it happened.
Many different processes in the body, both known and unknown, can contribute to SDS. However, cardiovascular disease, especially sudden cardiac death (SCD), is the most common cause of SDS.
Some factors that increase the risk of SDS include heavy drinking, smoking, not being physically active, being overweight, having high blood pressure, and having a chronic disease like diabetes or kidney disease.
Who was Alexei Navalny?
Navalny was an anti-corruption activist and was the biggest critic of Vladimir Putin in Russia.
He was jailed in 2021 after coming back to Russia from Germany, where he was getting better from being poisoned with a nerve agent in Siberia.
Navalny had believed that Putin is turning Russia into a feudal state and moving towards making it like a country ruled by a tsar again.
