The Chief Justice of India Justice Ranjan Gogoi dealt with over 750 cases in one day. Cases numbering from 12 to 751 were all defective which means they have been lying in the court some of them for almost nine years. CJI has given lawyers two weeks time to correct the mistakes failing which the case will be out of the court.
The ever-widening gap between the number of cases that are filed in the courts across the country and the number of judges to hear them has been a sad reality of the Indian judicial system.
More often than not those on the receiving end will be those knocking on the doors of the judiciary seeking justice. With the ever-growing backlog of cases, it might sometimes take years before it comes up for hearing and several more for the verdict to come.

Given this backdrop, on Tuesday, in a rather unusual move, the Chief Justice of India Justice Ranjan Gogoi dealt with over 750 cases in one day.
Over 750 cases were listed before the Bench of Justice Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta, and Justice Sanjeev Khanna.
According to the CJI, cases numbering from 12 to 751 were all defective, which means they have been lying in the court, some of them for almost nine years. Neither the complainants nor the lawyers had bothered to cure the mistakes in the filing of these petitions.
Clearing the cases, CJI has given lawyers two weeks time to correct the mistakes, failing which the case will be out of the court.
According to the Law Ministry, India has just 19 judges per 10 lakh people. The judiciary faces a combined shortage of over 6,000 judges, including over 5,000 in the lower courts itself.
