The body of 25-year-old Shilpa Pandey was recovered from the roadside near Shivaji Road, between Ambedkar Chowk and Kerala Public School, in East Delhi's Gazipur on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Body charred beyond recognition
The body was charred beyond recognition and was found to be stuffed inside a suitcase.
During the investigation, the police got the first leads from CCTV footage from the spot where the body was found. CCTV footage showed a Hyundai Verna with a taxi number plate passing through the place where the body was found. Police managed to track down the owner of the vehicle, Amit Tiwari, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
Live-in partner arrested
The 22-year-old, who works as a taxi driver, admitted to the police that the woman, Shilpa, was his cousin. He also admitted to killing her to cover up their illicit affair.
According to Tiwari, he and the victim had been living together for some time, and she had been pressuring him to leave his family and live with her permanently.
She had also allegedly threatened to falsely implicate him and his family if he refused.
How the victim was murdered
On Saturday, Tiwari, who was drunk, attacked the victim and choked her to death. He then took the help of Anuj Kumar, a welder and resident of Khora Colony in Ghaziabad, to cover up the crime.
Using petrol and stubble, the duo burnt the body in an isolated spot despite the heightened security in Delhi for Republic Day. The two accused then placed the body in a suitcase, which they later dumped on the roadside.
