A 45-year-old Yemeni war victim underwent a rare genital reconstruction surgery in India. The man&rsquos penis had been cut off amid unrest in the country and he came to Bengaluru for the surgery. Doctors used flesh and skin from his arm and blood vessels from his thighs to create a loop near the severed organ.

He was admitted to Apollo Hospital where doctors did a penis reconstruction surgery in August using flesh and skin from his arm.
The man is one of the many war victims who are receiving medication and undergoing surgery at the hospital.

Having faced the gruesome incident last year, the man was unable to stand and urinate and had faced a lot of embarrassment. He was forced to wear burqa and use female restrooms in his village.
¡°When he was attacked by extremists, his penis and one testicle was severed as were nerves and blood vessels. He underwent extreme trauma and was disturbed psychologically. He was counselled before the surgery,¡± Dr Naveen Rao, senior consultant plastic surgeon, who led the doctors¡¯ team along with senior consultant urologist Dr Deepak Bolbandi told TNN.
Doctors used blood vessels from his thighs to create a loop near the severed organ for blood circulation.
The reconstruction surgery took eight hours. The doctors fixed severed nerves to restore sensation.

The Yemeni, could not speak English or any Indian language and had to rely on an interpreter to communicate with doctors. He was worried about his family life and feared that his wife might leave him.
The man can lead a normal life now.
