FIFA Women's World Cup: Spain Outplay England To Win Maiden Title

Spain beat England 1-0 to win a maiden FIFA Women's World Cup title, as per Reuters. It was a perfect end to a competition that set new attendance and TV records.

Played in Australia and New Zealand, the ninth edition was the first time it was hosted in the southern hemisphere.

Lots of fans came to see

Interest among Australians did go down when the home team lost to England in the semis. But around 2 million fans did attend in total after the final saw a crowd of 75,784.

Olga Carmona's goal broke the deadlock for Spain and proved to be the winning goal. Spain dominated the game with the best chances and England went down fighting.

Several fans were seen around Stadium Australia in Sydney hours before the game started and troupes of drummers and stilt walkers added to the already festive atmosphere.

Maiden final appearance

England and Spain both were playing the final for the 1st time and England have not won a World Cup since winning the men's edition in 1966.

England players were on their knees in despair after it was all over and Spain celebrated after they were able to maintain the 1-0 lead, as per BBC Sport.

England's manager Sarina Wiegman has now been at the defeated end of 2 consecutive World Cup finals. She brought on Lauren James and Chloe Kelly in at the start of the 2nd half but Spain held on to the slim lead. It would prove decisive.

A tournament to remember

Australia's semis defeat vs England on August 16 saw an average of 7.13 million viewers on the channels Seven Network.

The 2019 edition in France saw over 1.1. million fans in 52 matches with an average of 21,756 people per game. This time it is around 30,000 after 64 games.

New Zealand did not see as much demand as the side was knocked out in the 1st round. FIFA distributed several tickets and some games saw no more than 7000 fans.
