Jay Shah made history as he became the youngest-ever chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) at the age of 35. Shah, who was elected unopposed, stepped into the prestigious role after the outgoing Chairman Greg Barclay decided not to seek re-election for a third term.
His appointment marks a significant milestone in the cricketing world, making him the first Indian to hold this position at such a young age. Social media platforms quickly became flooded with congratulatory messages following Shah's elevation.

Prominent figures from the cricketing community, including Indian cricketers Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, former coach Ravi Shastri, and current coach Gautam Gambhir, were among those who extended their best wishes to Shah on his new journey.
According to a recent report in Dainik Bhaskar, Shah's tenure as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary will be succeeded by Rohan Jaitley, the current president of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) and son of the late politician Arun Jaitley. While Rohan Jaitley appears to be the frontrunner for the position, other names being considered include Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Avishek Dalmiya, Punjab's Dilsher Khanna, Goa's Vipul Phadke, and Chhattisgarh's Prabhtej Bhatia. However, an official announcement regarding the new BCCI Secretary is yet to be made.
As Shah takes on the mantle of ICC Chairman, it's worth reflecting on the remarkable achievements and pivotal moments in Indian cricket under his leadership as BCCI Secretary.
IPL media rights deal
One of the most significant achievements during Jay Shah's tenure was securing the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights deal in 2022. The five-year broadcasting rights were sold for an astonishing INR 48,390 crore, making the IPL the second most-valued sporting event globally in terms of per match value, only behind the National Football League (NFL). This deal saw a remarkable increase in the value of each IPL match, which jumped from INR 54.5 crore to over INR 114 crore, a more than 100% rise. Globally, the IPL's per match value reached USD 14.61 million, second only to the NFL, where each game is valued at USD 17 million.
World Test Championship
Jay Shah's tenure also saw the Indian cricket team achieving significant success in the World Test Championship (WTC). India reached the WTC finals twice under his leadership, first in 2021 and again in 2023. In the inaugural final in 2021, held at Southampton, India faced New Zealand but unfortunately fell short despite a commendable performance.
In 2023, the team reached the finals again, this time at The Oval in London, where they took on Australia. Although they could not clinch the title, India's consistent performance in reaching the finals underscored their excellence in Test cricket.
T20 World Cup 2022
India's journey in the T20 World Cup 2022 was marked by high expectations and strong performances under Jay Shah's guidance. The team began the tournament with a thrilling victory against Pakistan, followed by wins against the Netherlands and Bangladesh, securing a spot in the semi-finals. However, the semi-final clash against England proved challenging, and despite their efforts, India suffered a heavy defeat, ending their campaign on a disappointing note.
Asia Cup 2023
In the Asia Cup 2023, India demonstrated their dominance in the region under Jay Shah's leadership. The team advanced through the group stages with solid performances and faced Sri Lanka in the final. India delivered a commanding performance, easily winning the Asia Cup title, which not only reinforced their supremacy in the continent but also bolstered their confidence ahead of major upcoming tournaments.
ODI World Cup 2023
The 2023 ODI World Cup, held on home soil, was a mixed bag for India. The team started strongly, with key victories in the group stages, leading to their qualification for the knockout rounds. However, the semi-final proved to be a tough challenge, and despite their efforts, India was unable to advance to the final. The campaign ended in disappointment as the team fell short of their goal of winning the World Cup at home, highlighting the fine margins in top-level cricket.
