What is Smart Replay System, technology set to feature during Women's T20 World Cup 2024 after IPL 2024?
The 2024 Women's T20 World Cup will debut the Smart Replay system, first used in IPL 2024, to speed up and improve decision-making through enhanced visuals and quicker communication between the third umpire and Hawk-Eye operators. The tournament begins on October 3, with Australia defending their title, seeking a seventh championship win.
The Women's T20 World Cup 2024, hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is set to introduce cutting-edge technology to aid decision-making on the field. In a first for an International Cricket Council (ICC) event, the Smart Replay system, which debuted during the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), will now be used at the global tournament. The ICC confirmed the inclusion of this advanced system, which has already been tested in England's The Hundred as well.
As per the ICC, the broadcast of each match will be supported by at least 28 cameras, providing comprehensive coverage of every game. "The coverage will feature a minimum of 28 cameras at every game, and will be complemented by a variety of analytical and visual enhancements. The Decision Review System (DRS) will also be available at all matches, with a Hawk-Eye Smart Replay System in place that enables the TV umpire to instantly review synchronized multi-angle footage for accurate decision-making," said the ICC in its official statement.
How does the Smart Replay System work?
The Smart Replay system is designed to enhance the speed and accuracy of the Decision Review System (DRS). Traditionally, communication between Hawk-Eye operators and the third umpire would pass through the TV broadcast director. However, with this system, the operators will be present in the same room as the TV umpire, streamlining the entire process and allowing for quicker decisions.
In addition to this, TV umpires now have access to more visuals than before, including the option to view split-screen images. For example, if there is an obvious gap between the bat and ball, the ultra-edge check might be skipped, allowing the umpire to move directly to other parts of the review. When it comes to stumping decisions, the third umpire will be able to analyze both front-on and side-on visuals simultaneously using a split screen.
