Much to the disappointment of fans who were hoping to see Neeraj Chopra defend his gold in the javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024, the Indian athlete had to settle for silver on Thursday night. The gold medal in men's javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024 was won by Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, who also set a new Olympic record.
First individual Olympic gold for Pakistan
Nadeem managed an astonishing 92.97m throw in his second attempt, securing Pakistan's first individual Olympic gold medal and the first podium finish for the country since 1992. In the process, he broke the Olympic record set by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway at the 2008 Beijing Games, which was 90.57m.
Third throw above 90m
Nadeem also registered yet another above-90m throw, measuring a distance of 91.79m on his final try. This was the third time in his career that the 27-year-old had breached the 90m mark, the first being at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

In contrast, defending Olympic gold medalist Chopra has never crossed the 90m mark in his career. His best throw to date is 89.94m, logged at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022.

Who is Arshad Nadeem
Nadeem, who was born in Mian Channu, in Pakistan's Punjab province, began his sports career as a school student, playing cricket. He later switched to athletics and settled on javelin throw after trying out shot put and discus throw.
His first major international tournament was the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati, where he won the bronze medal. In his previous Olympics outing at Tokyo 2020, Nadeem finished fifth in the men¡¯s javelin throw event with a best attempt of 84.62m.

¡°I was fit enough to do well in Tokyo, but I could not perform well at the time. After the Olympics, I worked hard and won the gold at the Commonwealth Games. After that, I tried even harder to maintain my rhythm. And today, I won the gold for the country,¡± Nadeem said after winning the gold.
