Four lions at a zoo in Barcelona have tested COVID positive, said veterinary authorities. This is just one in many documented cases globally where big cats have got the disease, as per a report in Reuters.
They are 3 females called Zala, Nima and Run Run along with a male named Kiumbe. All 4 were tested when keepers saw they were showing COVID symptoms.
Two staff members have also tested positive according to authorities.
An investigation is being conducted to find out how the lions got infected.
Keepers tested the lions just as humans are tested.
The Veterinary Service of Barcelona also got in touch with the Bronx Zoo in New York. 4 tigers and 3 lions had tested COVID positive in April. All of them recovered.
"The lions were given veterinary care for their mild clinical condition - similar to a very mild flu condition - through anti-inflammatory treatment and close monitoring, and the animals responded well," the authority in Barcelona said.
The male is 4 while and the females are 16. They have had no contact with the rest of the animals.
