Cauvery Water Row: All You Need To Know

On Monday, Supreme Court went on to alter the certified amount of water that Karnataka has to release to Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court has now asked Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs a day for the next 10 days to help meet the needs of the Samba crop in Tamil Nadu.

However, this new development hasn't gone down well as activists and farmers of Cauvery Horata Samiti. As they have reportedly been protesting at the forefront of the issue in Karnataka. So much so, that according to reports they had even gone ahead to block roads in Shrirangapattana taluk of Mandya. Activists and farmers of Cauvery Horata reportedly did this to protest against the Supreme Court's latest directive.

That's not all; Cauvery water dispute has continued to raise the tension levels both in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The horrific incidents of attacks have been reported through the day in both the States thereby giving ample proof for the same.

Here's all you need to know about the Cauvery water row:

1. Originating from Kodagu, the Cauvery basin covers a large part of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and smaller parts of Kerala and Puducherry.

2. The Cauvery river's water is utilise Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for irrigation and drinking purposes.

3. For those who don't know the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu Cauvery water dispute dates back to the pre-Independence era when Karnataka was Mysore and Tamil Nadu was called Madras.

4. In 1924, Mysore (Karnataka) and Madras (Tamil Nadu) reportedly reached an agreement, where in Mysore was allowed to build a dam at Kannambadi village to contain 44.8 thousand million cubic feet of water.

5. And this very agreement was reportedly valid till 50 years between the two states. However, post Independence, the two states were not willing to accept the agreement anymore and they took their dispute to the Supreme Court. Post which, this very matter has been sent to the Supreme Court several times however, each time there has not been a satisfactory solution which is acceptable to both the parties.

6. After years and years of dispute, Tamil Nadu was finally was granted 419 tmc ft of water and Karnataka was granted 270 tmc ft. However, the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments challenged the decision of the Cauvery Water Tribunal.

People came out on streets to protest and many vehicles were even damaged in the process. In fact, the enraged mob even set fire to some vehicles as well.

Do to this, bus services in Tamil Nadu were supensed and Section 144 was imposed in parts of Bengaluru city.

Ever since Supreme Court announced it's new ruling a series of protests have happened over the issue and people from both the states are attacking each other.
