The coronavirus pandemic is showing no sign of relenting, as both cases and deaths continue to mount across the world. There seems to be a new surge of the disease in many countries.

As the pandemic¡¯s global death toll approaches 400,000, known cases of the virus are growing faster than ever ¡ª at a rate of more than 100,000 a day.
The surge is concentrated in densely populated, low- and middle-income countries across the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and South Asia.
The pandemic¡¯s new direction is bad news for the countries like Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia where earlier the low infection rates were seen as evidence of the virtues of their leadership. That has quickly changed and these countries are seeing cases soar in recent weeks.

Brazil is seeing its number spiral at a scary rate. The country's death toll from the novel coronavirus has surged past 34,000 to become the third-highest in the world, surpassing Italy¡¯s, according to official figures released Thursday.
The South American country reported a new record of 1,473 deaths in 24 hours, bringing its overall toll to 34,021, behind only the United States and Britain.
Brazil is recording over 25,000 cases daily over the last few days and has now confirmed 614,941 infections in total, the health ministry said -- the second-largest caseload in the world, behind the US.
The things are also beginning to unravel in India, as country gradually moves to restart the economy. With over 9,000 coronavirus cases for the second straight day, the number of coronavirus cases in India hit a new high.

India's COVID-19 count surged past the grim milestone of 2.26 lakh. At least six states or Union territories witnessed the biggest spike in COVID-19 infection in last 24 hours ¡ª Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala and Assam.
The death toll in India reached 6,348. The states recorded 273 fatalities in last 24 hours, the highest toll in a single day since outbreak. A lion's share of the total casualties on Thursday came from Maharashtra.
Russia and Mexico are also seeing big surge in COVID-19 numbers. Russia has reported 441,108 cases so far, the third-highest in the world.

The country¡¯s coronavirus crisis response centre said 169 people had died from the virus in the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide death toll to 5,384.
While Mexico having remained unscathed for large parts is seeing cases spike substantially. The new infections reported on Thursday surpassed the record set just the previous day, and officials reported 816 more deaths as the pandemic engulfs Latin America's major nations.
Health officials said the fatalities included many deaths that happened weeks ago and have now been reclassified. Thursday's additions bring Mexico's tally to a total of 105,680 cases and 12,545 deaths.
