Dalit Lives Matter - Activists Hit The Streets In New York In Wake Of Hathras Tragedy
Unless you have been living under a rock in India in recent times, you are aware of the Hathras tragedy in UP. A 19-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped by upper caste men and she eventually succumbed to her injuries.
Unless you have been living under a rock in India in recent times, you are aware of the Hathras tragedy in UP. A 19-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped by upper caste men and she eventually succumbed to her injuries.
There was mass outrage over the incident and what made matters worse was when the police cremated her reportedly without the consent of the family. Also, there were reports that a medical exam showed no evidence of rape.
In the midst of all this farce came the caste issue with several prominent upper caste bodies supporting the accused. This led to clashes between the public and police and even opposition leaders had to battle the law in order to meet the victim's family.
In the midst of bizarre statements by politicians, the fact was highlighted that this was just another chapter in the atrocities carried out on Dalits especially in UP by upper castes.
#DalitLivesMatter began to gain precedence and now it has reached across the Atlantic too. Activists with pictures of Dr. BR Ambedkar were seen protesting on the streets of NE York. Check it out:

The Hathras incident has brought back memories of the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder in 2012. The rapists were hung in late March earlier this year, nearly 8 years after the crime was committed.
