A video has surfaced online showing a robot dog patrolling the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, the residence of US President-elect Donald Trump. The robotic dog ¨C which is increasingly being used by law enforcement in the US ¨C is among the additional security measures the 78-year-old President-elect will receive following his election victory.
Heightened security at Mar-a-Lago
Armed patrol boats and armed personnel were also seen outside Mar-a-Lago as part of a heightened security presence for Trump, who survived two assassination attempts during the presidential election campaign.
How President-elect is protected
As the President-elect, Trump is under the protection of the Secret Service, which is also entrusted to protect the president, vice president, and their families. All former US presidents and major Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates are also protected by the Secret Service.
According to the BBC, around 300 agents are assigned to the sitting president and vice-president, compared to the 90 to 100 who protect a former president.
Intelligence briefing for President-elect
Another service Trump is entitled to as the President-elect is intelligence briefings. According to Axios, these briefings are offered to presidential nominees to help them understand and prepare for the national security challenges they could face in office. This will also ensure that they do not say anything that undermines US national security.
All former US presidents also receive the President's Daily Brief, which is a daily summary of high-level, all-source information and analysis on national security issues.
However, in 2021, in an unprecedented move, Joe Biden blocked Trump from receiving intelligence briefings, stating that he could not be trusted because of his ¡°erratic behaviour,¡± even before the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
Last year US intelligence agencies resumed providing intelligence briefings to Trump after he secured the Republican nomination.
