A 23-year-old Italian woman had to be kept under observation in a Tuscany hospital after getting six doses of the Pfizer vaccine by mistake, news agency AGI reported as per AFP.
She was in good health after being given fluids and paracetamol after the injection.
Instead of injecting just one dose into her arm, a nurse by mistake injected the whole vial which is equal to six doses.
Doctors will continue to monitor the patient's immune response to the "massive dose of vaccine," the spokeswoman said.
The patient was entitled to get the vaccine before other people in her age group because she is an intern in the hospital's psychology department, she added.
An internal investigation has been opened, said Gianelli, who added that it was "maybe just human error, definitively not on purpose."
Earlier studies for overdoses of the Pfizer vaccine were limited to testing just four doses, according to the AGI report.
It has been reported to Italy¡¯s medicine regulator.
This is not the first such case. Overdoses have also been reported in USA, Australia, Germany and Israel.
Thankfully, nothing went wrong and the woman is in good condition. But those administering the vaccines need to be careful. It can put the person receiving the vaccine at risk and also waste doses that are meant for other patients.
One hopes such incidents are not repeated or at the very least, do not happen on a common basis.
