'Justin Trudeau government's days are numbered', Quebec nationalist party says Canadian PM will be toppled
Bloc Qu¨¦b¨¦cois said on Tuesday that it will work with other opposition parties in Canada's Parliament to bring down the Trudeau government after the Liberal Party failed to pass two of its private member¡¯s bills before the deadline.
Troubles are mounting for embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is facing increasing challenges from within his party and opposition to keep his government afloat. The latest crisis facing Trudeau comes from the Bloc Qu¨¦b¨¦cois, a Quebec nationalist party that has pledged to topple the minority government.
Opposition party promises to topple Trudeau government
Bloc Qu¨¦b¨¦cois said on Tuesday that it will work with other opposition parties in Canada's Parliament to bring down the Trudeau government after the Liberal Party failed to pass two of its private member¡¯s bills before the deadline.
Bloc Qu¨¦b¨¦cois Leader Yves-Fran?ois Blanchet had last month set a deadline of 29 October for the Trudeau government to pass two bills, including one aimed at boosting old age security payments for seniors, if he wanted to avoid an election before Christmas.
With the deadline now passed, Blanchet said on Tuesday that Trudeau¡¯s ¡°days are numbered.¡±
Trudeau government doesn't have the numbers
Trudeau¡¯s Liberals hold only 153 seats in the 338-seat House of Commons and run a minority government with support from other parties, including the Bloc Qu¨¦b¨¦cois.
However, this support now appears to be over as the Bloc Qu¨¦b¨¦cois has said it will work with other parties, including the leftist New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Conservatives ¡ª who are eager to force an election ¡ª to take down Trudeau¡¯s Liberals.
Trudeau on slippery slope
Trudeau has so far survived two no-confidence motions brought by the Conservatives but is increasingly becoming isolated.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh recently stated that his party would decide to support the Trudeau government on a case-by-case basis.
Elections in Canada
Canada is set to hold parliamentary elections before October 2025, and Trudeau is attempting to achieve what no Canadian prime minister has done in over 100 years: winning four straight terms.
