Last week, it was reported that the group was obliterated after their convoy of 56 tanks was blown to smithereens near Hostomel, just northeast of Kyiv, by Ukrainian missile fire on the second day of the Chechens' deployment.
Who was he?
Among those said to have been wiped out was Chechen general Magomed Tushaev the commander of the 141th motorised national guard brigade -- Chechen head of state Ramzan Kadyrov's elite force.
Now the Ukrainian government has claimed that the information about the Chechen plot came from agents from Russia¡¯s Federal Security Service (FSB) security service who are opposed to the war.
"And I can say that we received information from representatives of the FSB, who today have no desire to take part in this bloody war," Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov said.
"The special operation that was to be carried out directly by the Kadyrovites to eliminate our president is fully known to us today," Danilov stated.
"One group was covered in Gostomel, another group is now, let's say, under the gun," Danilov added.
"The Kadyrovites' elite group, which came here specifically to eliminate our president, was directly destroyed."
Kadyrov has also acknowledged that his men have been killed.
¡°Unfortunately, there are already losses among the natives of the Chechen Republic. Two died, six more were injured to varying degrees,¡± Kadyrov said on Telegram.
He said the killed Chechen fighters ¡°chose to become heroes.¡±
¡°Yes, they kill in war and that was their choice of profession,¡± he said.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy had said that he was aware that he was Putin's target no 1.
Others in the hit list reportedly included legendary former heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko and his brother and fellow Hall of Famer Wladimir Klitschko who had recently taken up arms to fight the Russian troops.
This comes as the war in Ukraine is into its second week with the Russian troops making huge advances across the country.
Ukraine has so far put up stiff resistance and has vowed to fight back against the invaders.
