Ashwin Ramaswami, a 24-year-old software engineer, is poised to make history as the first Gen Z Indian-American to step into United States politics by running for the state senate. Born between 1997 and 2012, Generation Z, also known as Zoomers, represents a new wave of political engagement and leadership.

Further, his election is set to make him the first Gen Z State Senator in Georgia and the only Georgia state legislator with both a computer science and a law degree.. Running as a Democratic candidate, Ramaswami faces off against Republican Shawn Still, notable for his indictment alongside former US president Donald Trump in connection with the January 6 US Capitol insurrection.
Who is Ashwin Ramaswami?
A tech startup entrepreneur with a background in cybersecurity for the US government, Ramaswami currently operates a consulting firm specializing in technology law and policy. Hailing from Georgia, he has collaborated with various nonprofits, startups, and small businesses to harness technology for public welfare and job creation.
A product of Stanford University's Class of 2021, Ramaswami's upbringing and heritage deeply influence his aspirations. "I was born and grew up in Georgia. I'm a second-generation immigrant, an Indian American, a twin brother, and an engineer," his campaign website declares.
Expressing his motivation for entering politics, Ramaswami articulates a commitment to community service and equal opportunities. "I'm running for (Georgia) State Senate to give back to my community. I want to make sure that everyone has the same opportunities that I had growing up," he shared with news agency PTI.

Identifying as a Hindu, Ramaswami underscores his enduring fascination with Indian culture and philosophy. "My mom is from Chennai, my dad is from Coimbatore. I've always grown up with Indian culture and also American culture growing up as well. I'm a Hindu. I've been very interested in Indian culture and philosophy my whole life," he affirmed.
Rooted in his upbringing, Ramaswami's candidacy symbolises a commitment to inclusivity and representation. "I want to give back to the community to ensure everyone has the same opportunities I had growing up," he said, emphasising the importance of amplifying the voices of young individuals from diverse backgrounds in politics.
