New York's Death Toll Crosses 10,000 As US Reels Under Devastating Effects Of The Coronavirus
One of the world¡¯s most bustling and sought-after cities, New York has been crippled by the coronavirus pandemic as death toll crosses 10,000.
While the toll in United States is over 23,000, New York alone accounts for over 10,000 deaths, which puts in perspective the devastating effect it has had on the state. New York saw a few positive signs Monday even as it reached another bleak milestone. It marked the first time in a week that the daily toll dipped below 700.
Almost 2,000 people were newly hospitalized with the virus Sunday, though once discharges and deaths are accounted for, the number of people hospitalized has flattened to just under 19,000.
In the US, about half of the more than 23,000 deaths reported are in the New York metropolitan area.
The impact in New York state has been brutal, with unclaimed victims buried in unmarked mass graves and makeshift morgues set up for the dead.
But Governor Andrew Cuomo declared the ¡°worst is over¡± in the state, even as he announced the grim new figure, adding that he was working on a plan to gradually reopen the economy.
¡°I believe we can now start on the path to normalcy,¡± Cuomo told the reporters in his daily news briefing.
The coronavirus pandemic has claimed almost 24,000 lives across the US, with almost 600,000 confirmed cases.
Worldwide, the death toll was over 120,000, with 1.92 million cases. Almost half a million have recovered worldwide according to the data.
