Trump 2.0: Canada on high alert after US election as immigration crackdown looms - 'We have a plan'
Donald Trump¡¯s 2024 victory signals tougher immigration policies, with plans for large-scale deportations and increased border restrictions. In response, Canada is heightening border security amid concerns over rising migrant numbers.
Donald Trump¡¯s 2024 presidential win spells a challenging future for immigrants, as he prepares to tighten restrictions on both legal and illegal immigration upon re-entering the White House on Jan. 20. According to AFP, Canada is already ramping up security, with Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesperson Sergeant Charles Poirier confirming heightened alert status along the border.
One of Donald Trump¡¯s key promises in his 2024 campaign was to launch the largest deportation effort in U.S. history, potentially affecting millions of undocumented immigrants.
His tough stance on immigration was evident even during his previous presidency, from 2017 to 2021, when tens of thousands of migrants¡ªparticularly Haitians stripped of U.S. protections¡ªfled north to Canada.
As Trump prepares for his second term, the threat of mass deportations looms large again.

In fact, reports from the South China Morning Post highlight that following Trump's 2024 election victory, U.S. searches for how to move to Canada surged tenfold.
Given these developments, Canada is bracing for a potential influx of migrants.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spokesman, Sergeant Charles Poirier, confirmed that authorities are on high alert. ¡°All of our eyes are looking at the border to see what¡¯s going to happen ¡ because we know that Trump¡¯s stance on immigration might drive up illegal and irregular migration to Canada,¡± he said.
In Ottawa, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland reassured Canadians that the government is prepared.
¡°We have a plan. Canadians need to know¡ our borders are safe and secure and we control them,¡± she said during a press conference following a security meeting, while not revealing details about the plan.
