Tyre Falls Off United Airlines Flight In San Francisco, Cars Crushed
The tire debris landed in one of the airport's employee parking lots. There were no injuries reported, but SKY7 was over the scene, where police placed caution tape around cars that appeared to be hit by the tire.
A dramatic incident unfolded on Thursday morning as a tire detached from a United Airlines flight departing from San Francisco International Airport bound for Osaka, Japan. The airline confirmed the occurrence, stating that the incident took place at approximately 11:35 a.m. during the takeoff of United Flight 35.
The debris from the landing gear tire fell into one of the airport's employee parking lots. Despite the alarming nature of the event, no injuries were reported. SKY7, hovering over the scene, captured the aftermath where police took precautionary measures by cordoning off areas with caution tape around cars that appeared to have been impacted by the fallen tire.
Responding to the situation, United Airlines announced that the flight had been diverted to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) where it landed safely. The airline assured that efforts were underway to organize an alternative aircraft to transport the 235 customers, 10 flight attendants, and four pilots to Osaka later on Thursday evening.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of swift and efficient responses to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and airport personnel during unexpected events.
"The 777-200 has six tires on each of its two main landing gear struts. The aircraft is designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires," stated the airline in response to the incident.
Officials confirmed that the runway was temporarily closed to facilitate the removal of debris caused by the detached tire. However, it was swiftly reopened, and no lasting impact on airport operations is anticipated.
An eyewitness, Gary Glass, vividly described the aftermath of the tire incident and its potential danger. "At the speed and velocity that it was coming down, it would have crushed somebody like a grape," Glass emphasized, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the fortunate absence of injuries despite the apparent threat posed by the falling tire.
