¡°Now we have something that turns out indeed to be my worst nightmare,¡± Fauci said at a virtual conference held by Biotechnology Innovation Organization.
"In a period of four months, it has devastated the world. 110,000 deaths in the US. There¡¯s millions and millions of infections worldwide. And it isn¡¯t over yet,¡± he added.
USA is on the verge of crossing the 2 million mark when it comes to COVID-19 infections. 683 people have died in the last 24 hours and the overall fatality tally is over 122,000.
Fauci has cautioned against the haste in withdrawing the restrictions. He is part of President Donald Trump's task force to fight coronavirus, but he has been clashing with the Trump who wants to open the economy with elections just around the corner.
"The public health measures in place are only going to work so much to prevent the spread of the deadly virus. But the world needs is a vaccine, or more to get ahead of it. The virus will not burn itself out with mere public health measure,¡± he went on to say.
¡°We¡¯re going to need a vaccine for the entire world, billions and billions of doses.¡±
Worldwide there are over 74 lakh cases while almost 420,000 people have died so far.
