Vladimir Putin calls Donald Trump 'intelligent' warns his life could be in danger
Vladimir Putin, who was in Kazakhstan's capital Astana noted that Donald Trump had overcome a ¡°serious test¡± to return to the White House, referring to the two assassination attempts he survived during the US presidential election campaign.
The US policy on Russia and American support to Ukraine are among the two major changes expected from the White House once President-elect Donald Trump assumes office in January. Given his past praises for Russian President Vladimir Putin, many assume that the incoming Trump 2.0 administration would be much more friendly to Moscow than the incumbent administration.
'Trump is intelligent and experienced'
The admiration the two leaders have is mutual, and Putin has also not shied away from praising Trump. On Thursday, Putin described the US President-elect as an ¡°intelligent and experienced¡± politician capable of finding ¡°solutions.¡±
¡°As far as I can imagine, the newly elected president is an intelligent and already quite experienced person. I think he will find a solution,¡± Putin said when asked about Russia-US relations under the new Trump administration.
'Trump overcame a serious test'
Putin, who was in Kazakhstan's capital Astana, also noted that Trump had overcome a ¡°serious test¡± to return to the White House.
"The absolutely uncivilised methods used to battle against Trump, up to and including an assassination attempt ¡ª and more than once," Putin said, adding, "By the way, in my opinion, he is not safe now."
'Trump's life could be in danger'
The Russian President also referred to the assassination of former US presidents and said Trump was intelligent enough to understand the safety risks he faced.
"Unfortunately, in the history of the United States, various incidents have happened. I think he (Trump) is intelligent, and I hope he's cautious and understands this," Putin said.
Assassination attempts on Trump
Trump had survived two assassination attempts during the US presidential campaign. In July, Trump was wounded when he was shot at during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Though shaken and bleeding, Trump soon stood up with a defiant pose, with his fist raised in the air ¡ª a gesture that helped him win over many more voters. In a separate incident in September, a man was charged with attempted assassination after camping out at one of Trump¡¯s Florida golf courses.
