From Rescue Teams To Aids: World Rushes To Help As Earthquake Wrecks Havoc In Turkey, Syria

The world has reached out to help as Turkey-Syria struggle with the rescue work in the aftermath of the deadliest earthquakes in a century.

India

The Indian Army on Tuesday morning (Feb 7, 2023) has mobilised a Field Hospital which is all set to help provide medical support to the people in the region. According to the Indian Army, a 99 member medical team has been dispatched from Agra based 60 Para Field Hospital and the team has a critical care specialist 每 apart from other medical teams there are Medical Specialist Teams, Orthopedic Surgical Team, and General Surgical Specialist Team.

Also, the teams are equipped with Oxygen generation plant, Cardiac monitors, X-ray machines, ventilators, and associated equipment which will help to establish a 30 bedded medical facility.

Futher, Khalsa Aid has sent a relief team along with other NGOs from Iraq to Turkey.

China

China will give a first tranche of 40 million yuan ($5.9 million) in emergency aid to help Turkey＊s relief efforts after this week＊s major earthquake, according to state broadcaster CCTV. The country＊s Red Cross will give emergency aid of $200,000 each to Turkey and Syria, it added. China expressed condolences and concern for the loss of life and property, a spokesperson from China International Development Cooperation Agency said on Monday.

The European Union

The European Union said it was urgently dispatching search and rescue teams from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Romania to Turkey to help. In a statement, the bloc also said it was directing its satellite system to support Turkish efforts in mapping the quake and its aftermath.

The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is coordinating the deployment of rescue teams from Europe.

Germany

Germany＊s Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) ※can set up camps to provide shelter as well as water treatment units§, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said. The THW agency is also preparing generators, tents and blankets. Berlin will also increase its assistance to charities such as Malteser International providing humanitarian aid in northwest Syria by $1.1m, she said.

Greece

Greece said it was sending a C-130 transport aircraft to help neighboring Turkey, along with 21 members of the Greek fire service＊s special disaster management unit, rescue dogs, a rescue vehicle, medics and the head of the government＊s organization for disaster management, the Greek Civil Protection Agency said.

US

The U.S. national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said in a statement that the United States was ※profoundly concerned§ by the earthquake and stood ※ready to provide any and all needed assistance§ to Turkey. President Biden had directed USAID and other federal government partners to assess the U.S. response options, the statement added.

UK

Britain is sending equipment, rescue dogs and a team of 76 search and rescue specialists, according to the country＊s foreign minister, James Cleverly. ※We stand ready to provide further support as needed,§ he said.

Russia

Russia＊s Emergencies Ministry put 100 staff on standby and stood ready to send two planes with rescuers to Turkey, the Russian news agency Tass reported. President Vladimir Putin also said Russia was ready to provide assistance to Syria, in a telegram to the country＊s president, Bashar al-Assad, according to Syrian state media.

Japan

Japan is dispatching a rescue and relief team and providing emergency humanitarian assistance.

Taiwan

Taiwan pledged to donate $200,000 for quake-relief efforts. A 40-person rescue team from the self-governing island is also expected to fly to Turkey.

UAE

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) pledged humanitarian assistance worth $13.6m to Syria. Emirati Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum ※directed urgent humanitarian aid to those affected in Syria§, the official news agency WAM said. UAE dispatched a first plane to Adana Airport in southern Turkey ※carrying search and rescue teams, crews, and medical equipment§, it said.

Ukraine

Ukraine, which is battling against a Russian invasion, said it ※stands ready to send a large group of rescue workers§ to Turkey. ※We are working closely with the Turkish side to coordinate their deployment,§ the country＊s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said on Twitter.

Poland

Poland will send rescue group HUSAR, consisting of 76 firefighters and eight rescue dogs, Interior and Administration Minister Mariusz Kami里ski said.

Israel

The Israeli government said it was preparing to send search and rescue teams as well as medical assistance to Turkey. While Israel and neighboring Syria are enemy states and have no diplomatic relations, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a request had been received through diplomatic channels for humanitarian aid to Syria. ※I have authorized that,§ Mr. Netanyahu said.

The Israel Defense Forces sent a humanitarian delegation of 150 personnel and tons of aid to the earthquake-stricken area in T邦rkiye.

Malaysia

Malaysia has deployed 70 members of its Special Malaysia Disaster and Rescue Team (SMART) to assist local authorities rescue efforts, with the team due to arrive early on Tuesday. Malaysian Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said he had spoken to his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu for a full update on the situation. ※I am sad to say, the destruction is massive and the countries affected by the earthquake will require support from everyone.§ Zambry said in a statement on Monday night.

South Korea

South Korea＊s President Yoon Suk-yeol has said he will send rescue workers and emergency medical items. ※Yoon ordered related government agencies ＃ to come up with additional support measures in case needed by Turkey,§ the presidential office said in a statement.

Spain

Spanish urban rescue teams are preparing to travel to Turkey, Spain＊s interior ministry said, and officials from the defence ministry and other departments were coordinating to send the crews immediately to Turkey.

Italy

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Italy＊s Civil Protection was standing by to contribute support and provide first aid.

NATO

Voicing full solidarity with Turkey, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said on Twitter: ※I am in touch with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and NATO Allies are mobilizing support now.§

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)

※NRC is assessing the situation in order to provide direct support to those most affected across Syria. A massive scale up is needed and our organisation will be part of it,§ said Carsten Hansen, Middle East regional director for NRC.

WHO

The United Nations＊ World Health Organization chief, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said emergency medical teams had been activated to provide essential health care for the injured and most vulnerable.
