Why I Demand The Freedom To Be Unreasonable

We had been on the phone for 3 hours, talking about how the real world works. It wasn¡¯t a conversation, but an argument. Finally, he said, "You need to stop wearing those rose tinted glasses, they make you unrealistic and unreasonable." And even though he hung up, the words kept echoing in my mind for hours.

Five crumpled tissues and a kajal less face later, I sat wondering why everything in this world, every action of mine, everything I said, had to be backed by a reason. According to last night¡¯s argument, I figured that millions of people all around the globe were looking for some ¡®reason¡¯ or the other all the time. It was sad, plain sad.

Why should we justify everything we do? We are walking towards modernity, and with that we are dealing with this constant urge to justify everything we do. I don¡¯t want to explain myself all the time. For instance, I will fight with my boyfriend because he was stuck in a meeting and couldn¡¯t talk to me for two hours. It doesn¡¯t make sense and I am being plain stupid, but it¡¯s okay, I am not perfect. I want to park my car in the neighbour¡¯s spot because it's not entirely his parking. Who decides that? I want to eat at the Big-Chill Cafe every day and I don¡¯t care if it¡¯s expensive. I wan't to spend all that money on their mud pie and Colombian chocolate shake. Similarly, I want to go to office and ignore everyone, simply because I don¡¯t feel like talking. I know that all these things make me the weird one, but I don't care.

What¡¯s the harm in being natural or taking each day as it comes? I don¡¯t want to be categorised as one of those people who thinks and acts, who are sure of what they are doing and those people who have a rationale behind their every move. You are not supposed to argue with your boss because he¡¯s your boss. You cannot drive slow in the fast lane. You are a loser if you stop your car when the signal turns amber. I want to stop when it¡¯s amber and I don¡¯t want to rush my car and get caught amidst chaos and the never ending honking.

I refuse to believe that somehow, the world would come to a crashing end just because I insisted on my phone call being answered each time his phone was on call waiting. It¡¯s easy to confuse what I am talking about with being obsessive, possessive, needy and ergo being branded a complete nut, because I am not. It¡¯s just that I don¡¯t want to fit in the lifestyle where people are trying so hard to be ¡®reasonable.¡¯ There is this constant need to be independent, cool and not-clingy and most people only pretend to do that. For example, it might be killing you to ignore someone, but you will do it because apparently it¡¯s the right thing to do. I won¡¯t ask him to pick me up because I am oh-so-independent. Agreed, you are. But there are times when you want him to pick and drop you. It makes you feel happy and if you accept it, you won¡¯t die. I demand accompanying my boyfriend on every vacation he takes, because I want to spend time with him. I am not being clingy and I don¡¯t want to pretend that I can do without him. Love is just one odd thing. And it was never meant to make sense right? What happened to sending flowers and showering each other with gifts? What happened to talking for hours at night? What happened to showing love and commitment? Everyone I see around me is so scared to lose their mind that they end up mastering the art of being practical, unemotional and free. From what I see, it¡¯s cool not to answer calls and make the other person feel ¡®lonely¡¯ because it¡¯s easy to be busy. It¡¯s tough to be available.

And it¡¯s not just about being unreasonable with boyfriends, it¡¯s the same with everyone. If I tell my parents that I want to quit my job and write a book, they think I am being stupid. Then why did they let me believe that this was my life, and I could dream of doing whatever I wanted to? I want to pack my bags and leave to pursue that dream. I don¡¯t care about being serious or earning money right now. I want to do my stuff and do it all my way. I don¡¯t want to be realistic and save money because a few years down the line I have to get married. Honestly, we don¡¯t know where we¡¯ll be tomorrow so why be ¡®reasonable¡¯ for something that¡¯s going to happen years from now? Of course, I am not saying this for everyone. But there might be people like me out there, who would want to believe in the old clich¨¦ that you should follow your heart. And if you are aware of that clich¨¦, you would also know that our sensitive little heart is famous for defying reason.

Honestly, I have no problem with reasonable people. It¡¯s great if you have something to back your actions and opinions with.

How many of us, cross your heart and say, are reasonable?

I don¡¯t know about you, but I am not even going to try to be realistic. I don¡¯t want to be reasonable. That¡¯s the point. For me, being reasonable is mundane, crass, not-my-kind-of thing. It¡¯s something I have never been and I never even want to be. I know I¡¯ll be labelled a girl who is demanding, hyper, probably a psycho and someone who hardly makes sense. And I'm okay with that. You know why? Because this world is full of sensible people, so let¡¯s just take a break from them.

That¡¯s exactly why I refuse to be judged this independence day, when I say I want independence from reason and logic. I want #FreedomToBeUnreasonable
