Aizawl FC Threaten To Fast Unto Death As Relegation Looms Large, Sports Minister Vijay Goel Takes Up Their Case
Aizawl FC are the first team from the North-east to win the I-League
Days ago, Aizawl FC scripted the greatest ever football fairytale by winning the I-League in the presence of big names such as Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. They became the first side from the North-east to clinch India's top division football league.
They were once a second-division side that rose through the ranks to make a powerful impact in Indian football. Now they are being threatened with relegation but Union Sports minister Vijay Goel has said that he would look into the matter and speak to the All India Football Federation about it.
Their relegation threat is looming large as the AIFF is looking to merge the Indian Super League with the I-League. The football body is looking at retaining all eight ISL teams and add some big names from I-League. Aizawl FC obviously may suffer the hit because it does not have a major fan following across the nation.
Sports minister Vijay Goel said, "As far as the controversy between Aizawl FC and Indian Super League (ISL) is concerned, I¡¯m going to talk to the AIFF. Definitely I would like to take their case up at AIFF."
Aizawl FC are quite resolved to not let their ground slip away and are also ready to approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Asian Football Confederation President Salman Bin Ibrahim Al- Khalifa.
