Meet Gaurav Solanki, An Electrician¡¯s Son Who Punched His Way To Gold At Commonwealth Games

Of tears, struggle, perseverance, fight and dreams - the story of Gaurav Solanki is incredibly inspiring.

Born in Ballabgarh, Haryana, Gaurav has fought all the odds to have an inspiring career. Having had a difficult childhood due to her family's financial difficulties, he has had to overcome grave circumstances to be where he is today.

Now an Commonwealth gold medal winner, Gaurav is one of India's promising young boxers. But it hasn't been an easy road to success. Born to an electrician, he has had to fight not just financial difficulties, but also lack of sports facilities in his hometown of Ballabgarh.

In his native village, there was a lack of sports culture and very few people came forward to inspire Gaurav to pursue boxing. His school started imparting boxing training as a sport, and in order to have fun Gaurav joined the training. But little did he know that it was going to become his profession.

In 2012, when Gaurav started showing great promise and spark of becoming a boxer, his father sold his 50-yard land to financially support Gaurav's boxing career. So, when their son wanted to chase his dreams, his family stood behind him strongly and took every measure to help him achieves his goals.

His family's support reinvigorated him and made him push his limits to groom his skills and enhance his game. He sweated it out and put in the hard yards to improve his overall attributes and qualities.

His moment of reckoning finally came in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Representing his country in the 52 kg flyweight category, Gaurav Solanki produced the performance of his life to beat Ireland's Brendan Irvine with a final score of 4-1 to win the gold medal.

The hard work had finally paid off, and he didn't forget to thank his parents after the win. "Today I am dedicating my medal to my mother and I want to represent Tokyo Olympics 2020 and I want to stay there when the Indian flag is raised", an ecstatic Gaurav chuffed.

The resilience, determination and heart that strived through hardships had finally reached its deserving destination. It was what Gaurav Solanki deserved.

Still only 22, he still has a great future ahead of him. He is promising a lot, and he is hungry for success.
