Brave is a browser with built-in ad-blocking, one that would be a dream to most of us. However, the developers are trying to entice users to watch advertisements anyway by rewarding them for it.
They¡¯re giving away free cryptocurrency to people taking the time out to watch ads.
Founded by Mozilla¡¯s former CEO Brendan Eich, Brave is about ready to test its Basic Attention Token (BAT) platform. This is a version of the browser with about 250 prepackaged advertisements, that users sign up for to get early access. And, if they watch the ads displayed while using the browser, they get free cryptocoins.
The main thing here is that Brave¡¯s pre-selected ads are customised based on your regular viewing habits, though it doesn¡¯t exchange your data outside the platform. It¡¯s different from traditional ads generated by other companies, which instead track your activity across other websites. This way, Brave wants to retain its privacy-conscious user base, while still showing that ads can be used responsibly, and with a customer¡¯s consent, as a revenue source.
It¡¯s still unclear how much BAT cryptocurrency a user stands to gain from viewing or interacting with each ad, though a blog post from the company claims a user will receive 70 percent of the gross ad revenue. In addition, right now the only thing BAT is good for is to donate to your favourite content creator. In future though, the company says you¡¯ll eventually be able to redeem them for premium, paid-only content.
