This Year's Best Smartphones Will Offer At Least 30% Better Battery Life Than 2017's Flagships
Bumps in both battery and performance are promising outcomes for the year's new flagships.
As we wait for this year¡¯s flagship smartphones to show themselves at MWC 2018, Qualcomm has finally opened up its new offerings this year for perusal of the press. That includes its new smartphone processor, the Snapdragon 845.
The 845 is the successor to last year¡¯s Snapdragon 835 ( what most of your smartphones likely have), and it has a lot of expectations to live up to. Meeting those goals involves a lot of upgrades to the SoC.
For one thing, the quad-core processor now has a clock speed of 2.8GHz compared to the old 2.45GHz, and also features an Adreno 630 GPU in place of the Adreno 540. Overall, reports have indicated there¡¯s not too much of a performance boost over last years¡¯ Snapdragon 835, though a few tweaks here and there means there are a few incremental bumps. However the new GPU should more than make up for that. So don¡¯t worry, all thos AR apps you want to download should run just fine.
On the other hand, the processor is expected to show a significant improvement in battery efficiency. On the test model loaned to reviewers, tests showed a whopping 30 percent improvement in battery efficiency over the 835. In addition, the chip supports the new QuickCharge 4+ which will let you juice your phone for about five hours of of usage from just five minutes of charging.
Of course, the details will become clearer when manufacturers begin releasing Android devices with the Snapdragon 845 soon. But a couple of things you can definitely expect are for your phone to be that crucial bit faster, but more importantly, to support all the computing power with the battery to do it all day long.
