iPhone 8 To Have Curved OLED Screen, Glass Body, Wireless Charging & Three Models

We¡¯re still stuck in 2016 and already the rumour mills are abuzz with Apple¡¯s tenth anniversary iPhone slated for launch next year. iPhone 8 mania has got industry analysts salivating at the thought of just how Apple will pull out all the stops and mesmerise the world with a truly iconic iPhone.

And word on the street is pretty exciting, as far as iPhone 8 enthusiasm goes. Heck, the world needs this because the last couple of iPhones (6s and 7) haven¡¯t really blazed any trails!

Here¡¯s what the iPhone 8¡¯s expected to have:

Flexible OLED display

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple¡¯s building a prototype iPhone 8 which has a flexible OLED display, and the Cupertino-based company has even asked hardware suppliers Samsung, Sharp, LG and Japan Display to step up the production of thinner OLED panels.

OLED panels are undoubtedly more expensive than LCD ones, as they¡¯re more vivid and offer better contrast, and should help the iPhone 8 innovate beyond the LCD-based Retina Display bar, so to speak. We don¡¯t expect this to be across all iPhone 8s, however -- only the premium version will sport OLED display, we reckon.

Edge-to-edge glass body, no Home button

According to Macrumors.com, a website that keeps a close watch on all kinds of Apple rumours, for several years now Jony Ive (Apple¡¯s Chief Design Officer) has been wanting to introduce an iPhone with a single sheet of glass, with an innovative edge-to-edge design with the display pretty much taking up the entire front of the iPhone 8. And what better time to go all out and wow the world than 2017, when the iPhone will officially turn 10 years old?

Whether this would be functional or practical remains to be seen, but in terms of a style statement, an edge-to-edge glass design is great news for the iPhone 8.

Reports also suggest that there will be no Home button on the upcoming iPhone 8 and Touch ID fingerprint recognition will be supported anywhere on the single slab glass display, according to a patent filed by Apple for such a functionality.

Wireless charging support

Apple won¡¯t be blazing any trails in this department, since competitors like Samsung and Google and few others have already launched smartphones with wireless charging capabilities, but it¡¯s still a great development for the iPhone 8 to have wireless charging support.

Look at it this way - the way Apple dropped the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7 and dropped a bunch of ports on the recently launched MacBook Pro, it would totally be in keeping with recent Apple tradition if it decided to introduce wireless charging in the iPhone 8. No wires FTW!

Three different variants of iPhone 8

Since 2014, Apple has been launching two variants of the iPhone -- one premium version and the other one which is just a step down and slightly more affordable. However, analysts are predicting Apple to break that tradition next year with the iPhone 8 launch.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus sports two variants measuring 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays, respectively. But with the upcoming iPhone 8, predictions are being made that there will be a total of three variants. The new screen sizes may be 5.2-inch or 5.8-inch, depending on manufacturing and suppliers¡¯ constraints and also the features that Apple¡¯s planning to pack into the spiffy new iPhone 8.
