Vivo has finally announced its much awaited 2018 flagship, the Nex, a smartphone the Chinese company says ¡°fulfills the bezel-less dream.¡±
The Nex is based off Apex, an ambitious concept phone Vivo displayed at the Mobile World Congress in February.
Like its ancestor, the Nex keeps a bezel-less design and stays away from the now widely adopted notch. Instead, it employs a selfie camera that pops out of the top edge of the phone whenever required. Because of this, the Nex can achieve a 91.24 percent screen-to-body ratio with its 6.59-inch display, though there¡¯s still a slight chin at the bottom. There¡¯s also a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display, though it only covers a small piece of the screen.
This entire phone is also a speaker!
Most importantly though, the company has also employed some audio trickery to achieve the true bezel-less effect. It uses ¡°screen soundcasting¡± instead of an earpiece. The technology turns the entire display into a speaker, by sending vibrations through it instead of sound through an earpiece. How that's physically and acoustically possible (or qualitatively better) is something we will only be able to comment when we spend time on the device.
Supposedly, this is actually a more battery-friendly option than an actual speaker. Additionally, Vivo says it's optimised low to high pitch sounds so users will have a much better experience when playing music on the loudspeaker.
The Nex packs a Snapdragon 845 processor with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The cheaper version of the device instead runs a Snapdragon 710 processor with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. There¡¯s a 12MP f/1.8 primary camera with a 5MP f/2.4 secondary, alongside the 8MP f/2.0 selfie camera. Thankfully, the old-school headphone jack remains.
Priced at around $780 (approximately Rs 52,600) for the high-end version, the Nex is a premium device that¡¯s more advanced than and yet still cheaper than the iPhone X. The only problem is, it¡¯s currently only available in China, with no mention of whether it¡¯ll ever cross the border.
