Sony Has More Exclusive Games, Which Are Better Quality, Claims Microsoft

Microsoft has admitted that Sony has more exclusive games than Xbox, while also claiming that most of Sony¡¯s first-party offerings are better quality, reveals a report by Engadget.

This is an assertion made by Microsoft in a filing with the UK¡¯s Competition and Markets Authority which is currently conducting an in-depth review of the Activision-Blizzard acquisition.

This was based on a filing made on October 31, 2022, and it has been recently made publicly available.

Microsoft has also stated that Sony is the ¡°dominant console provider¡± as well as a ¡°powerful game publisher¡±. The company has also claimed that Sony is around double the size of Microsoft¡¯s publishing business and ¡°equivalent in size to Activision¡±.

Microsoft has admitted that Sony will have over 280 exclusive first and third-party titles on PlayStation in 2021, nearly five times more than on Xbox.

Apart from Sony¡¯s own franchises (which include popular titles like Ghost of Tsushima, The Last Of Us Series, God of War series etc), it also participates with third-party publishers for exclusive rights to the games, claims Microsoft, giving examples for titles like Final Fantasy XVI, Silent Hill 2 Remake and others that either haven¡¯t or won¡¯t make it to Xbox.

Microsoft has highlighted that console exclusives comprise a higher chunk of global game sales for Sony than Microsoft. Although it didn¡¯t reveal that for Xbox exclusives, players don¡¯t even need to buy the game, simply owning the Xbox Games Pass subscription is enough.

Microsoft has even gone ahead and compared Metacritic review scores for PS and Xbox games, claiming that Sony¡¯s top 20 games in 2021 had a score of 87/100 whereas the same for Xbox was around 80/100.

The whole kerfuffle surfaced after Sony claims that the Microsoft-Activision deal could mean Microsoft could make Call Of Duty an Xbox exclusive, despite Microsoft¡¯s Phil Spencer stating that they have no such plans and they wish to bring CoD to the platform for years to come.

Microsoft has also claimed in the filing that it offered Sony a 10-year deal to keep CoD on PlayStation (which Sony declined), while also stating that, ¡°it is implausible that Sony, the leading console with a more than 2-to-1 lead, would be foreclosed as a result of not having access to a single franchise.¡±
