Earlier this year, we finally got our hands on the first foldable devices on the market, the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Unfortunately, though we were ready for foldable smartphones, they weren't ready for us. Now, it seems like the might be again.
A couple of months ago, reports began emerging regarding the new foldable phone. Apparently the display on the Galaxy Fold were acting up in the hands of various reviewers. The displays were covered by a sort of screen protector, which unfortunately looked like the disposable kind put on new phones. As a result, a lot of people tried to peel it off, irreparably damaging the device. In other cases, the screens just started freaking out on their own.
As a result, the trial units were recalled and the device's official launch pushed back. Now, it seems Samsung has been able to iron out the wrinkles with the Galaxy Fold and is putting it on the market again. It's the first bit of good news for foldable phones in general. After all, just last week, Huawei said it was also holding off on releasing the Mate X, citing similar problems.
"Most of the display problems have been ironed out," Samsung Display Vice President Kim Seong-cheol said at an event in Seoul this week, "and the Galaxy Fold is ready to hit the market."
At the very least, we'll finally get statistics about the phone's actual hardware then, and hopefully the display will be able to hold up under pressure. After all, with the bad press the first time around, they absolutely do not want a second recall like with the infamous Galaxy Note 7.
If this device succeeds, it'll be the first of its kind to actually make it. What we're hoping for though is for other companies to jump on the idea too, so we can see some truly novel designs in the coming years.
