Apple Complies With Strict Chinese Law, Locks Down App Store On iPhones

Apple's App Store for iOS devices including iPhone and iPad is getting locked down in China after a recent regulation. China updated an existing online software regulation to lay out strict criteria for apps stores and apps in the country.

It now appears that Apple has begun to comply. If you're in China and want to continue using banned apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube, things just got even harder.

China tightens grip on app developers

Now, all app developers hoping to publish their apps on the App Store in China to provide their Internet Content Provider (ICP) filing number from the Chinese government. Just last month, China announced that it would require an ICP license in order for apps to be listed in all mobile app stores.

Apple is finally starting to give in. This means that a loophole that allowed iPhone users in China to download and use banned apps via VPN will no longer work.

According to Reuters, for apps to qualify for an ICP license, they need to host their back end in China. Essentially, foreign apps must have a local component in order to be available for download in China.

Apple was hoping it wouldn't have to comply with the ruling, and company officials met Chinese government representatives to express concerns over the new rules, The Verge reported. However, nothing seemed to have worked out and China's Great Firewall is now even stronger.
