Android Is Killing It With Foldable Devices, And Apple Is Releasing A ... New iPod Touch?

Don't get me wrong, iPods are great. I had an early generation iPod Touch myself back in the day (though I'm not sure which one), and this new version is certainly quite an upgrade. It now packs the A10 Fusion system-on-a-chip that was introduced with the iPhone 7. Before this, the iPod Touch packed the iPhone 6-era A8, when it was launched in 2015.
Aside from that however, it looks pretty much the same. It's got the same 4-inch Retina display, classic Home button, and a few colour options. Like the previous generation, the new iPod Touch also supports iOS 12.
The big thing Apple is going on about though, is that the new A10 Fusion chip brings with it the capability to handle augmented reality apps. It's also just in time for the launch of Apple's new gaming service, Apple Arcade, expected later this year. It's basically a subscription service focusing on App Store games.
Still, releasing a new iPod Touch after four years is a weird move for Apple, even if it's making it more powerful. Most assumed Apple was just going to focus on the iPhone, given that it's the biggest (of its declining) hardware earners.
It is a lot cheaper than an iPhone though, since it's missing qualities that make or break a cellphone. You know, like the ability to make calls. You get 32GB of storage for Rs 18,900; for R 28,900, you get 128GB of storage; and for Rs 38,900, you get 256GB. Maybe Apple thinks it'll sell some iPod Touch devices to people that want the iPhone experience without the price. Maybe we'll start seeing users with iPods and cheap Android phones just for calling.

The only area where an iPod Touch makes sense is if you wanted a non-iPhone, non-Android for gaming -- because iOS gaming is still the best mobile gaming experience out there.
Or, you know, maybe we'll just look back at this next year and think once more... "What were you smoking Apple?"
