Apple Unveils New iPhone 14 Series With Satellite Connectivity, Larger Screens
Unlike last year, this year¡¯s iPhone 14 won¡¯t be coming with a Mini model. Instead, we¡¯re getting a standard and a Max version with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch OLED screens respectively.
Apple has finally gone ahead and unveiled the new iPhones for today -- the iPhone 14 series which includes two phones in the standard 14 series and two more in the pro models. Let¡¯s start with the standard iPhone 14 series.
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
Unlike last year, this year¡¯s iPhone 14 won¡¯t be coming with a Mini model. Instead, we¡¯re getting a standard and a Plus version with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch OLED screens respectively.
The phone still consists of the notch, but a more low-profile one. The models however still lack any form of high refresh rate, similar to seen on last year¡¯s Pro models
Under the hood, we¡¯re looking at the same processor as found on last year¡¯s iPhone 13 -- the A15 Bionic, (staying true to leaks, of course).
The camera system is another place that has seen a much-needed upgrade with a larger sensor (albeit still at 12-megapixels) and a larger overall camera cutout. It also gets sensor-shift OIS for better stabilisation. In fact, the cameras perform 49 percent better in low-light performance. A more upgraded deep-fusion system betters low-light performance.
The front camera is also a 12-megapixel shooter with autofocus -- a much-needed upgrade.
Apple claims that the iPhone 14 Plus is the longest-lasting iPhone in this year's line-up.
Also, US-variants of the iPhone 14 won't get a sim tray and will get connectivity using eSIM. The phone also gets force and fall detection, similar to that on an Apple Watch.
Satellite SOS feature
The iPhone 14 series also gets Satellite connectivity -- a feature that was strongly hinted at for last year's iPhone -- although it's only for SOS. The phone offers a guide to appropriately direct the phone in the direction of the satellite. The communication options however are limited and only meant for emergencies.
The feature is subscription-based and will be available for free for the first two years for iPhone 14 users.
The iPhone 14 starts at a price tag of Rs 79,900 and the iPhone 14 Plus starts at Rs 89,900.
You can preorder the smartphone starting September 9. the standard iPhone 14 will go on sale starting September 16, whereas the larger iPhone 14 Plus will be available for purchase starting October 7.
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
Coming to cr¨¨me de la cr¨¨me of the iPhone 14 lineup -- the Pro models. This year¡¯s Pro configuration remains the same, with a 6.1-inch and a 6.7-inch display size, however, this time the notch on the phone is also getting a different treatment with a pill-style punch-hole, marking the departure of the ugly notch, which many might be relieved to see.
The pill has been named Dynamic Island, which uses different animations and transitions to act as a notification pop-up, and doesn't really disturb the whole screen while doing so.
The notifications are also reactive and can be expanded to explore more from the app.
The displays are brighter with 2000 nits peak brightness outdoors. The Pro models also get Always On display, thanks to a more power-efficient panel including an upgraded LTPO tech.
On the hardware front, the Pro models also get the pro-level hardware with the latest and greatest A16 Bionic chipset (hexa-core CPU) built on a 4-nanometre process. It also gets a 5-core GPU for gaming.
For the 'Pro' cameras, you get a newer 48-megapixel sensor primary shooter with a quad-pixel sensor. It also sports a 24mm focal length for wider image capture. The camera performs two times better in terms of low-light performance compared to the iPhone 13 Pro. You still get a 12-megapixel telephoto shooter with a 48mm focal length.
The ultrawide sensor is also at 12-megapixel that's 3 times better in low-light performance. The flash system has also been upgraded for more natural lighting. The camera also supports ProRAW capture at 48 megapixels.
Apple's iPhone 14 Pro starts at a price tag of Rs 129,900 while the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at Rs 139,900. You can pre-order the Pro models starting, September 9, with availability, beginning September 16.
