Apple's Rumoured Foldable iPhone Could Sport A Kindle-Like 'E-Ink' Display

Apple is planning to put an "E-ink" display on its rumoured foldable phone, a trusted Apple analyst says. Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple is testing "E Ink's Electronic Paper Display (EPD)" to build a foldable device like Samsung's Z Fold series.

It appears that the e-ink display would be available to use on the outer screen when the phone is folded. If you're not familiar with e-ink displays, they're mostly used in e-readers like Kindles. The display now also has a version that offers colours. Even then, e-ink displays are known to have longer response time compared to LCD or OLED screens that are the standard on mobile devices.

But why would Apple fit a so-called inferior screen on a premium smartphone not meant for reading? It appears that the iPhone maker wants to offer users limited functionality on the fold display to save battery.

Apple going in a different direction than Samsung

If this is true, Apple's philosophy could be extremely different from Samsung, a company that has not used any e-ink displays on its foldable range of devices and has largely stuck to its bright OLED panels.

With an e-ink display, Apple could save up the battery of its foldable iPhone, whenever it is released. Earlier, multiple reports indicated that Apple is actually working on a foldable device. The Cupertino-based company has used OLED displays made by Samsung, LG, and others in the past. Now, it appears that Apple is looking to partner with LG to develop OLED panels for iPads and MacBooks.

Apple could be going for e-ink or e-paper display for a multitude of reasons. For starters, it consumers less power compared to OLED. Unfortunately, such displays are slower and also offer less in terms of vibrancy.
